The entertainment industry has long been a highly profitable business area. In order to have an interesting and bright time, a person is willing to pay. From the very beginning of the cinema, this area was interesting to the public. And let the first films be black and white and dumb. Today, hundreds of millions of dollars are invested in the production of the most spectacular paintings, the most talented actors, directors and scriptwriters are used, the most advanced computer technologies allow creating special effects unthinkable a few years ago. And all this in order to attract the public to the cinema and, ultimately, make money on it.

In fact, there are even a few sources of income for films, in addition to the quite obvious film distribution, there is also the sale / rental of digital media, merchandising, and streaming. And the rights to broadcasts bring a certain income, years and years after the release of the film for rent. But still a standard assessment of the commercial success of the film is the box office he collected in cinemas. These data are considered basic primarily historically, and their calculation is much simpler. We can only assume that in the near future there will be a shift in revenue items towards digital online sales – people increasingly prefer to watch a new movie at home, on a large screen with good acoustics.
The highest grossing films in the history of cinema have compiled a list, both taking into account absolute values and taking into account inflation. The bulk of the data is based on international rental information from the reputable Box Office Mojo website.

What genres of films are most profitable?
Interestingly, over the past century, historical dramas, war films and musicals have always been popular, and therefore box office. But in the 21st century, the trend has clearly changed. Suddenly shot film franchises. The stories of superheroes are more than a dozen years old, but right now they have gained worldwide popularity. As a result, the Marvel universe set of films has already raised $ 22 billion, and the film Avengers: Final (the fourth part of the Avengers saga) generally ranks first in terms of fees.
It will not be difficult to find on the list films about Harry Potter from the books of D. Rowling, several parts of The Fast and the Furious, Pirates of the Caribbean. Interestingly, some film franchises have been on the screens for decades: Star Wars, James Bond, Star Trek. Who knows, maybe their younger competitors will have the same long life.
The producers and children did not disregard, realizing that you can also make good money on them too. You can easily find animated films from Walt Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, and Illumination in the list of box office films.
Of course, the absolute list is somewhat biased – inflation has somewhat reduced the successes of those large-scale and popular years that were filmed back in the 1960s and 1970s. Repeated rentals of these already classic films allow them to compete with young competitors. Reprints and recreated 3D versions also help – the same “Titanic” thus gained at least $ 100 million.
But ticket prices are gradually rising, pushing past favorites into the depths of the list. And yet, given the level of inflation, the highest-grossing film in history is to recognize Gone With the Wind. And the fees shown in our tables are expressed in US dollars at the exchange rate at the time the movie was released.

Top grossing films
At the moment, the leader is the film Avengers: Final, which raised $ 2.8 billion and slightly outperformed Avatar, which was filmed in 2009. The amount of fees relates directly to cinemas, other sources of income are not taken into account. But they can make up a large part of the income. If inflation is taken into account, then the Avengers will be overtaken not only by Avatar, but also by the Titanic.
Other numbers are interesting. The same “Titanic” to the 2.2 billion dollars collected in cinemas earned another 1.2 billion from the sale and rental of DVDs and digital media. But for “Avatar” there is no complete such statistics. It is only known that 16 million DVD Blu-ray discs worth $ 345 million were sold in North America alone, and global sales of digital media amounted to an additional 30 million pieces. If you add home video sales to the main source of income, both films earned at least $ 3 billion. But there are also sales of broadcasting rights on television, which also significantly increases revenue. It is believed that this article can reach 20-25% of the film distribution. For example, Titanic earned another $ 55 million from NBC and HBO, which makes up nearly a tenth of total revenue in North America.
The commercialization of film images can bring even more than directly selling cinema tickets. For example, “The Lion King” in total collected more than $ 2 billion, but the production of a musical on this story brought more than $ 6 billion! Merchandising can also bring considerable profit. For example, the same “Lion King” helped sell $ 3 billion worth of related products.
Someone may doubt the success of Wheelbarrows (2006), which raised “just” $ 462 million at the box office, but over the next 5 years they managed to sell branded goods worth $ 8 billion. An even more resounding success in this area came in Toy History: The Big Escape. Cartoon raised 1 billion dollars in cinemas, and another 10 billion for the sale of goods.
In this table, we restrict ourselves only to revenues directly from film distribution. Already 46 films have managed to collect more than 1 billion dollars and five – more than 2 billion. The directors of the Russo brothers can be considered the most commercially successful, two films of which collected more than two billion box office and another 1 – more than one billion. Two films from the top 5 were directed by James Cameron. The list of commercially successful filmmakers includes celebrities such as J.J. Abrams, Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson.

Top grossing inflation films
Marketing for the promotion of modern films often does not take inflation into account, which helps to promote the film in the highest grossing rating. Nevertheless, for the sake of objectivity, it is worth considering the factor of price changes, whose long-term effect should significantly redraw the top list of the highest grossing films. It is no coincidence that in the absolute list there are very few films of past years. To compensate for changes in the exchange rate, an adjustment was made for inflation. It is impossible to say that this allows you to accurately assess success, because the cost of tickets did not always change in parallel with inflation. If in 1970 a movie ticket cost $ 1.55, or 6.68 in terms of 2004 prices, then in 1980 a ticket cost $ 2.69, but in 2004 it even dropped to 5.5. And around the world, ticket prices have been changing at different rates. Relying on the number of tickets sold also will not work, because for old films only the total amount of fees is known.
And although it will be rather difficult to formulate a universal criterion for the box-office film, such attempts have been made. The price index for adjusting gross values, as well as the exchange rate and currency conversions, were taken into account. These criteria have helped rise some old films. As a result, the leader in the final rating was Gone With the Wind tape, shot back in 1939. It is she who is considered the highest grossing film in the Guinness Book of Records. In 2014, inflation-adjusted fees were estimated at $ 3.4 billion. There are different estimates of this amount depending on the sources, from 3 to 3.8 billion.
Accordingly, it is not clear to the end who the main competitor of the leader is – some put Avatar (2009) with 3 billion on the second line, while others put Titanic (1997) with 2.9 billion.
