Among a whole series of routers that are almost identical in form and function, it is not so easy to stand out. Tenda actively strives to make its products memorable and stand out, both in appearance and in features. This is solved not only by design solutions, but also by a sensitive response to the needs of users. Moreover, devices from this manufacturer remain in the middle price segment, offering slightly more options at a price similar to competitors.

Tenda AC10U delivery set
The router is located inside a box of rather impressive size, made in the traditional black and orange colors for Tenda devices. The front side shows the router itself, and on the right, on a bright orange stripe, its main features are listed.
But the back side is much more informative. In addition to three pictures showing the implementation of the main scenarios of Tenda AC10U operation, there is also a comparative table of four Tenda router models. With its help, the manufacturer shows that this device is quite productive and is not particularly inferior to more advanced and expensive models. Below, in the form of icons, the main functions of the device are indicated.
Inside the box, in addition to the router itself, there is a Russian-language instruction with a QR code on it for quick installation of the application, a 12 V / 2 A power adapter with a replaceable plug (replacement for the American / Chinese standard is provided), a cable for connecting to a computer and a warranty card.
Tenda AC10U design
Tenda is not afraid to experiment with the appearance of its routers, deviating from the classic rectangular shape in every possible way. And if Tenda AC8 evokes associations with Batman, then Tenda AC10U seems to be inspired by some character from the Star Wars universe.
There is in the outlines of the futuristic body something from both a spider and a robot. The trapezium-shaped body received ribs rising up in the middle. Traditionally, the manufacturer does not use glossy plastic – black and matte looks durable and will not collect fingerprints. Two antennas are attached to the sides and two more to the back.
In the center fold, there are hidden slots that allow ventilation of the internal parts of the device. There are four indicators on the front face of a complex shape. During operation, they light up blue, but the indication can be turned off in the settings.
The rear panel is traditionally used to accommodate four network ports. They are all yellow, but they are marked with embossing on the plastic. To the right of them is the power connector, and to the left are the reset / WPS buttons and forcibly turning off Wi-Fi. Finally, on the left side is the USB 2.0 port.
The lower surface has mostly received slots for ventilation. There are four rectangular plastic legs on the sides, they are high enough not to block the holes. On the central platform below there is a sticker with the necessary technical information and data for the initial setup.
Setting up and managing Tenda AC10U
For the primary connected router, you must carefully read the signatures of the network ports. This is important because they are the same color:
- 1, 2, 3 – LAN ports for connecting computers, cameras and other client devices. If the first configuration will be carried out from a computer, then it must be connected to one of these ports. For this, you can use the supplied cable. If you are setting up the router from a laptop or smartphone, then the cable is not needed.
- WAN – the port into which you will need to connect the cable of the Internet provider.
Unfortunately, the initial setup is not possible through the proprietary Tenda WiFi app (link for iOS, link for Android). Work with it will have to be activated in the control panel, but after the router is switched to operating mode. And the easiest way would be to configure Tenda AC10U via Wi-Fi using either a laptop or a tablet / smartphone.
1. First, connect the router to the network using the supplied cable. The front panel LED will light and flash.
2. Now connect the cable from the Internet provider to the Tenda AC10U router, and if you have a modem at home, connect the cable from it to the WAN port of the AC10U. After that, the corresponding indicator will light up constantly.
3. If you are configuring the router from a computer, then connect it to the device using the supplied cable to the LAN port.
4. If the configuration is carried out from a laptop or tablet / smartphone, then go to the Wi-Fi connection settings. You will see two new access points. One of them will have the name Tenda_XXXXX, and the other will have the name Tenda_XXXXX_5G, but instead of x, a combination of letters and numbers. Connect to one of these networks. The primary network code and password for it are indicated on the label on the bottom of the router.
5. Now, regardless of the connection method, you will need to open tendawifi.com in your browser or go to the IP address 192.168.0.1. You will see the Tenda AC10U configuration web interface.
6. This wizard is simplified as much as possible even for other models of the same manufacturer. At the first step, you need to specify your type of Internet connection. The small list contains all the options common in our country. If you are unsure which one is being used, check with your provider for the type. In the second drop-down menu of the same window, you can clone the MAC address of the computer to the router or enter it manually.
7. In the next step, you can rename the wireless network and create a new password for it (optional).
8. Apply the settings and wait for the router to reboot. Now it will work in the new Wi-Fi network, the name and password for which we entered.
9. For further configuration, reopen tendawifi.com in your browser or enter IP 192.168.0.1. Enter the previously set password to log in.
The device administration panel will open in front of you. The main page allows you to select the language. By default, the section “Internet connection status“. The main part of the page is devoted to showing the diagram of the Tenda AC10U operation with the devices connected to it, external IP address and current speed.
The orange tab on the left contains all the available menu sections:
Internet settings… On this page, you can switch your router to another operating mode by making it a repeater or access point. The method of connecting to the provider is also selected here, if you need to change this parameter.
Internet settings… Here you can select the type of connection, as well as configure DNS.
Wi-Fi settings… In this section, you can manually set in which frequency range the router works, you can give it the ability to combine bands under one SSID. In addition, it is possible to create a Wi-Fi schedule, as well as turn on / off noise immunity.
Switching between 2.4 and 5 GHz will be automatic. In the same section, you can change the name of the wireless network, enable or disable it, select the security mode, signal strength and change other parameters corresponding to the section.
Guest network… In this section, the router can create and configure a guest network whose clients will not be able to access the main network. We can limit its lifetime and maximum access speed.
Parental control… More and more options for monitoring children are in demand. In this section, you can check how long and which devices have been online. It is possible to set the time range for Internet access.
VPN… The router is so smart that it has its own VPN server. By connecting to it, you can access your home network from the Internet. In this section, you can find the PPTP server settings, disable clients and see the ones connected to the router via VPN.
USB application… This menu section is absent in the cheaper Tenda AC10U cousins, which lack a USB port. This is where you can configure the file sharing settings for the flash drive connected to the router.
This is an important option and actually makes the device a file / media server. It is possible to distribute files via FTP or Samba, but you should not expect DLNA functions. Here you can also set custom roles to restrict access.
Advanced settings… This section is needed for users who want to fine-tune their router. Here you can set port forwarding, black and white lists, bind IP to MAC address when issuing addresses, set up dynamic DNS, allow the mobile application, and more.
System settings… A large and important section that is responsible for the basic settings of the router. Here you can change the password for access to it, set the speed of access to the Internet, configure the parameters of the DHCP server that issues addresses to connected clients, set the date and time, update the firmware, reboot the device, and more.
Working with Tenda AC10U through the application
As mentioned above, working with the application is possible only after the initial configuration of the router parameters via the web interface. To activate the control of the router using the Tenda WiFi mobile application (link for iOS, link for Android). go to the menu Advanced settings router and select Tenda App…
Activate the switch Tenda App Control and press the button Save…
Then open the Wi-Fi settings of your smartphone or tablet and connect to the Wi-Fi network distributed by the Tenda AC10U router.
After that, open the Tenda WiFi app. The Tenda AC10U router will be detected automatically.
In the tab Tools there are parameters of the router available for changing.
In the tab Vault you can access the USB storage connected to the router.
Testing the Tenda AC10U router
The router received a productive 28-nanometer Realtek processor, clocked at 1 GHz and 64 MB of RAM. An important feature is the use of gigabit ports, one of which is WAN.
Thus, it is potentially possible to appreciate all the advantages of optical technologies and the speeds they provide. No wonder the box features 4K streaming. The speed and stability of work with several devices simultaneously is ensured by MU-MIMO and Beamforming technologies.
To measure the speed of the Internet using the Tenda AC10U, the laptop was located at different distances from the router. Wi-Fi settings were set by default, no other devices were connected.
When Tenda AC10U was connected to the Internet with a tariff plan of up to 100 Mbps, this is what happened:
|2.4 GHz||5 GHZ|
|Near the router||49.5 Mbps||92.64 Mbps|
|In the next room||45.75 Mbps||69.79 Mbps|
|Two walls from the router||16.79 Mbps||2.54 Mbps|
On the one hand, when it is closest to the router at a frequency of 5 GHz, it shows maximum performance, on the other hand, when it is removed, the speed at 2.4 GHz drops more evenly.
When an external channel is connected with a speed of more than 100 Mbps, much will depend on the capabilities of the receiving device’s modem (802.11n up to 300 Mbps and 802.11ac up to 867 Mbps, but in general, the speeds at 5 GHz will be higher than 2 , 4 GHz It is quite possible to see the Internet speed of 300-500 Mbps on a tablet or phone connected to Tenda AC10U.
If we talk about using the USB port, then its bandwidth is not enough to play FullHD video on a Smart TV, Android set-top box or similar device. Still, I would like to see a USB 3.0 standard port in the router, as well as a full-fledged DLNA implementation.
Tenda AC10U is an excellent development of the branded line of routers. The device relies on the functions already more and more often demanded even by home users: dual-band operation, gigabit ports (including for WAN) and a USB port for external storage or 3G / 4G modems.
Tenda AC10U clearly stands out for its looks, and its configuration with the maximum use of large visual elements is simple. In the price category up to 3,000 rubles, there is hardly a competitor that surpasses Tenda AC10U in functions. And the ability to work with external modems makes the device an excellent choice for a country house where there is no possibility of a cable connection to Internet providers.
