USB history: USB 1.0 to USB-C + speed table

10/12/2021 by

We offer remember why at all to light a USB interface and how he changed the world of computing.

♥ BY TOPIC: USB-C vs Thunderbolt 3 – What’s the Difference?

What is USB (Universal Serial Bus)?

USB stands for “Universal Serial Bus”, but users 90 first part would cause unless a sad laugh. At that time, to connect to a computer mouse or keyboard needed a PS / 2 interface for other external devices – serial ports, parallel ports, etc. And attempts to create something universal ended with the advent of the next specialized (and very few people want) interface.

USB

The birth of a hero

Therefore, when a number of companies have joined forces and in 1995 created a USB 1.0, it is an important milestone in the history of personal computers. For example, with the introduction of USB manufacturers have begun to reduce the number of “mandatory” port in laptops, to eventually reduce their size and to turn from the rather impressive suitcases in modern ultrabooks. A connectors miniUSB and microUSB later helped in the same way the development of technology for smartphones and tablets.

♥ BY TOPIC: How to check the speed of SSD drives, HDD or USB-stick on Mac (macOS).

USB 2.0: and screw up …

USB 1.0 was useful mainly for its versatility. Interface speed only enough to transfer small files, so by the beginning of the 2000s was designed USB 2.0 standard. However it came into the world, and USB-drives or “USB drive”, and this is where users went to the full. In just a few minutes on a flash drive could not copy a couple of files, and the whole season of the show or the Windows installation files. In addition, unlike the CD, you can do it once was, and spoil the stick was harder than scratch the CD. Even the CD-drives and other peripherals using USB are now could not be embedded in personal computers or laptops, but simply connect to them as needed. Into the hands of users and manufacturers played and the fact that the majority of USB-devices are “hot” setting, and were ready to work immediately after connection, without the need to restart the computer.

USB 3.0 / 3.1: only stars above

With received in 2013 the mass distribution of USB 3.0 standard, it seems, slept last restrictions. Given the speed of the standard, which is more then a few times have increased with the advent of USB 3.1, users can in a few minutes to transfer to each other the entire collection of high-resolution pictures, movies in 1080p resolution and music in lossless-format. And could not throw, but just look, for example, video of impressive dimensions directly from a flash drive or external hard drive.

USB speed depending on interface generation

  • USB 1.0 – up to 1.5 Mbps
  • USB 1.1 – up to 12 Mbps
  • USB 2.0 – up to 480 Mbps
  • USB 3.0 / USB 3.1 Gen 1 – up to 5Gbps
  • USB 3.1 Gen 2 – up to 10 Gbps

USB-C: symmetry glory

USB-C: symmetry glory

By the way, in the same 2013, the USB Type-C interface was born (later it was called simply USB-C), which has gained popularity now. It is popular mainly because of the miniature size, the symmetry of the connector, which can be inserted by either side, and the ability to do everything at once – transfer data, sound and image, charge connected gadgets and provide Internet access. USB 1.0 with this load would definitely failed. In addition, for the first time in many years, USB-C has allowed PC and Apple technology standards to “meet” because USB-C cables are compatible with Thunderbolt 3 connectors, which evolved alongside USB and were used primarily in MacBooks.

Review of Transcend JetFlash 930C – USB-C and USB-A flash drive

25/08/2021 by ALOK DAS

Flash drives have become our indispensable helpers for a while. It turned out that even a compact device can carry significant amounts of data. Flash drives turned out to be so popular that numerous manufacturers began to compete not only in technical capabilities, but also in the appearance of devices. And this accessory has become everyday, literally, expendable.

♥ BY THEME: Transcend ESD350C Review: Shockproof External SSD with Impressive Speed.

And the speed of such a drive is not so important in many areas. Today, interest in flash drives has faded away – we are increasingly choosing the most inexpensive device, because it, with a high degree of probability, will soon find itself on the shelf among brothers, low-speed, smaller volume, unsuccessful design. A new class is already replacing these devices – an external SSD in a compact case. However, such solutions do not look cheap.

And modern solutions already require a departure from the classic USB connector in favor of a much more modern Type-C. Even in the latest Apple products, you can find this solution, it replaced the “native” Lightning. JetFlash offers a drive model with an index JetFlash 930C, which just combines two actual connectors, a significant amount of data storage, as well as a high transfer speed. Let’s take a closer look at this device.

♥ BY THEME: Transcend ESD250C review is a fast external SSD, slightly larger than a flash drive.

Transcend JetFlash 930C external view

Transcend's JetFlash 930C - USB-C and USB-A flash drive with impressive speed

Externally, the device has a classic form for a flash drive – an elongated small block with rounded caps. A feature of the device is the presence of two connectors at once on opposite sides of the case: Type-A and Type-C.

Transcend's JetFlash 930C - USB-C and USB-A flash drive with impressive speed

I must say that such a solution cannot but attract attention – the new standard increasingly requires appropriate equipment, and the use of adapters only complicates the design. But the old-tested USB did not give up its positions either – it can be seen in most of our devices. And in order not to carry with you two flash drives with different connectors, you can use this solution from Transcend.

Transcend's JetFlash 930C - USB-C and USB-A flash drive with impressive speed

Transcend's JetFlash 930C - USB-C and USB-A flash drive with impressive speed

The body of the drive is made of laconic but stylish golden aluminum. The material does not look cheap. The device is 20 mm wide and 8 mm thick. The total length of the flash drive is 71 mm, and its weight is 11 grams.

Transcend's JetFlash 930C - USB-C and USB-A flash drive with impressive speed

In a word, a device of a classic size, which does not stand out among many of its brethren. But the implementation of the design can hardly be called successful. The connectors are covered with caps, which, as you know, tend to get lost. But the Transcend JetFlash 930C has two of them.

Transcend's JetFlash 930C - USB-C and USB-A flash drive with impressive speed

They are made of translucent dark plastic and, which is even funny, if they are incorrectly docked, they will bulge slightly in relation to the body. In addition, the design of the flash drive has deprived it of the traditional eyelet for a lace – it is just usually placed on the side opposite to the connector. But the JetFlash 930C has a second connector here. Convenience had to pay off with a compromise.

Transcend's JetFlash 930C - USB-C and USB-A flash drive with impressive speed

Application of Transcend JetFlash 930C

Transcend's JetFlash 930C - USB-C and USB-A flash drive with impressive speed

Transcend’s JetFlash 930C will truly prove useful for owners of PS4 and PS5 game consoles – a flash drive can significantly increase the built-in storage. In addition, for fans of watching movies on a 4K TV, such a drive will help you store a dozen films in UHD resolution at once. And, of course, let’s remember about photo media libraries, backups and just storing documents.

Testing Transcend JetFlash 930C

The device is controlled by an integrated Silicon Motion SM3282 controller. It is just capable of providing read / write speeds of up to 400 MB / s in theory, taking the capabilities of flash drives to a new level. The external interface is USB3 Gen1 with support for two types of ports, A and C. However, both connectors cannot be used at the same time. And when connecting a flash drive to a mobile device, you should make sure that it supports the USB OTG function.

The Transcend JetFlash 930C is available in three memory sizes: 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. I must say that in this performance, the older model looks especially attractive: capacious, fast and versatile. There are clearly few such solutions on the market.

Let’s talk about performance. Of course, the promised 400 MB / s is the peak speed that you will rarely see with active use of the Transcend JetFlash 930C. The controller is fast, but only relative to its class brothers – the speeds of elite and expensive compact SSDs it cannot provide. In fact, you will see the promised 400 MB / s writes within the cache, which the flash drive has about 15 GB. When working with small files, this saves. But as soon as you start transferring large volumes, the speed drops to 150 MB / s. In fact, this is still a very good result, even not all external SSD drives demonstrate such results. If we compare with ordinary flash drives, then most of them do not reach the 100 MB / s bar at all.

Testing Transcend JetFlash 930C Testing Transcend JetFlash 930C

It is also worth considering that these figures show low-level utilities; when working with the file system, much more write operations are required.

Software

A significant bonus to the flash drive is the presence of proprietary Transcend Elite software (for Windows and Mac, for Android). The application detects the connected drive, providing additional features such as: backup and recovery of files, encryption, as well as support for working with cloud services Dropbox and Google Drive.

Conclusion

Speaking about the advantages and disadvantages of the Transcend JetFlash 930C, I would like to compare it with representatives of the same class. Here is just a funny picture – there are not so many of them! For example, the models from Transcend based on the same controller lack the versatility in the form of a second connector. And classic solutions, even if they are comparable in format, cannot provide such high speeds. If we talk about portable SSD-drives, then their high price is deterred. So it turns out that the Transcend JetFlash 930C is a universal solution in all respects: fast, inexpensive, capacious and with two actual connectors. The chosen niche will clearly ensure popularity of this drive model.

The device is a compact black block, on top of which there is a silver plate with a rounded edge. On top of the surface of the station, the name of the manufacturer is written in white letters.

Moshi Symbus Mini 7-in-1

The silver rounded plate is not just a design element, but also provides useful functionality – at the bottom, between it and the case, there is a recess for storing the SnapTo cable.

Moshi Symbus Mini 7-in-1

This allows it to be conveniently folded, and the magnets will provide retention. Thus, the station itself will take up a minimum of space in the bag, and it will not harm other devices there, as well as itself.

Moshi Symbus Mini 7-in-1

The docking station has received compact dimensions: 12.8 × 7.6 × 1.3 cm. The main part of the ports is located on the front panel. There is a connector for Ethernet on the left, and in an idle state it is covered with a latch for the sake of compactness. The cover will slide down when plugged into the cable port. There is a 10cm cable on the back panel. Its small length will not give an opportunity to locate the docking station far from the computer, but its compact size will make the Symbus Mini neighborhood quite comfortable.

Moshi Symbus Mini docking station features and functionality

The presence of the phrase 7-in-1 in the title clearly indicates the number of ports used.

10 year warranty!

Moshi offers its customers the industry’s best 10-year global warranty covering all product categories. In order to activate the 10 year warranty, you need to register the device on the company’s website.

To find the serial number and authentication number, peel off the protective layer of the authentication sticker on the back of the Moshi Symbus Mini box.

Moshi Warranty

Conclusion

Moshi engineers did not come up with anything new, just listening to the wishes of users. The company was able to create a truly portable and ergonomic hub with a good basic port set. It’s hard to tell right away what is missing here. The well-thought-out case, although not a design masterpiece, is laconic and functional, allowing you to conveniently hide the cable inside yourself with the help of magnets. The hub is capable of solving port compatibility issues, and also allows high power supply to pass through itself. A clear and functional device will be an excellent assistant for active computer users.

j5create JCD389 is a unique modular USB-C MacBook docking station for all occasions

10/12/2020 by ALOK DAS

Experienced computer users understand that smart work management saves time and unnecessary steps. If we consider modern laptops, then this approach implies their constant connection to the necessary devices instead of searching for the required accessory if necessary. Modern technology allows you to get the most out of our technology.

The laptop can connect devices for fast data transfer for the purpose of their subsequent storage, additional monitors and even charging to work with other devices while using the laptop. Typically, each of these needs is handled by a separate device, but j5create has come up with a universal solution for many of these problems. One device will help you solve them – the JCD389 UltraDrive Kit modular docking station.

J5create JCD389 dock packaging

J5create JCD389 dock packaging

The device comes in a cardboard box made in a proprietary white and orange color scheme. The front side shows the docking station itself and several of its modules and the main features are marked with icons. In the corner there was a place for a photograph of the kit assembled in a case. Thus, the front side itself already gives an answer to the question about the purpose of the device and its capabilities. The upper part of the back panel is given to a photograph showing the dock in action: it is connected to a MacBook with many cables with different interfaces connected. The rest of the area is dedicated to listing the device’s capabilities in different languages.

The internal design of the box also turned out to be thoughtful. It received the form factor of a book, and the internal volume is covered with an additional orange cardboard page. The insert is attached to the front side with Velcro. The inside of the faceplate is given to a number of small docking station usage diagrams describing its capabilities. The cardboard insert was also informative. It shows the device itself and its blocks with an explanation of 12 possible schemes for their switching. In fact, before you touch the device, you will already know almost everything about its capabilities.

Inside the box you will find the docking station itself, five modules for connecting to it or to a computer, a carrying case, and instructions. However, it only repeats the information placed on the box and inside it.

j5create JCD389 is a unique modular USB-C docking station for MacBook

J5create JCD389 docking station design

It should be noted right away that the form factor of the device is rather unusual – there are not so many modular docking stations on the market. It’s no coincidence that the j5create JCD389 has received the iF design award. You can hardly find a similar product in a quality design.

The black carrying case has a rectangular shape. There is just enough space inside to fit the station itself and all its modules there. The inner surface is soft for extra protection. One half has a mesh pocket for additional accessories or the blocks themselves. On the second half there are recesses for accommodating four modules and the station itself with the fifth unit connected to it. The shape of the pockets matches the shape of the elements exactly. The case is zipped along the perimeter.

The main dock module is made of aluminum and has a matte silver surface, and the side edges are trimmed with white plastic. This is a rectangular bar measuring 98 × 34 × 13 mm, which weighs 48 g. One side of it received rounded corners, and the other – strictly straight.

j5create JCD389 is a unique modular USB-C docking station for MacBook

It is to it that additional modules are connected. The manufacturer’s logo is applied in the middle of the upper edge in light gray. On the opposite side, the model name, serial number and ports are labeled in the same color. On the long edge, next to the rectangular corner, is the USB-C connector. It is rigidly fixed and does not retract inside the case. The other long edge is given to four ports, while the short, rounded edge accommodates the fifth port. The other short edge received a recess throughout its area for better contact with the modules plugged into it.

j5create JCD389 is a unique modular USB-C docking station for MacBook

The plastic modules themselves have a similar geometry – one face is rectangular, and the other is rounded. Moreover, their dimensions are 31 × 34 × 13 mm, and their weight is 11 g. All these five matte elements are white. On each of them, near the side rounded edge, the name of the interface or its image (in the case of Ethernet) is applied, whose extension is implemented here. Each module also has a static USB-C connector. One side edge has a “step” for better physical contact with the main module, while the other edge is given to the corresponding port.

In the connected form, the structure with the block has dimensions of 126 × 34 × 13 mm.

It will not be difficult to disconnect one unit and replace it with another. A bundle of the main and additional unit with two USB-C connectors located next to each other will just fit into the ports of the mentioned MacBook models. Thus, the number of ports will change and expand, all depending on your tasks.

j5create JCD389 is a unique modular USB-C docking station for MacBook

The modular station can be used in four ways:

  • Connecting an additional module to the side edge of the main unit;
  • Connecting an additional module to the USB-C port of the main unit;
  • Connecting one additional module to the side of the main unit, and the second to its USB-C port;
  • Connecting an additional module directly to a laptop, without involving the main unit. All that is required is a USB-C port.

The J5create UltraDrive Kit provides 12 use combinations in total. This number will cover almost the entire range of possible tasks.

USB-C vs Thunderbolt 3 – What’s the Difference?

14/11/2020 by ALOK DAS

For the uninitiated, both USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 are one and the same because both there and there there is a two-way connector, i.e. you can’t go wrong when connecting the cable. But there is still a difference between them.

♥ BY TOPIC: Unclutter for Mac Review: The best clipboard with file and note storage.

Thunderbolt is a very remarkable hardware interface in the IT world. It allows you to connect peripheral devices to your computer. And the distinctive speed is the high data transfer rate – up to 40 Gb / s in the third version of the interface. For comparison, according to the specification, USB 3.0 only provides a maximum speed of up to 5 Gb / s. Apple was at the origin of this interface, and today it is actively used in its technology, like no other manufacturer. When describing branded computers, we often see the mention of Thunderbolt, but very few people know what it is and how it works.

USB-C vs Thunderbolt 3 - What's the Difference?

♥ BY TOPIC: What is the battery life of a MacBook and how to find out the number of recharge cycles.

PCIe history

The interface itself was developed back in the 2000s in active cooperation between Intel and Apple. The technology was originally designed to work with optical cables and was called Light Peak. But it turned out that even a simple, inexpensive copper connection can provide a given speed. Moreover, the copper cable could carry power – in the latest standard, up to 100 watts per port. The technology was introduced by Intel in 2009 – a 30-meter optical cable was used to transmit two high-definition video streams. And the first commercial device with this interface was the MacBook Pro, announced in early 2011. The market for Thunderbolt-enabled peripherals has gradually emerged. In 2013, its second version was introduced, but Thunderbolt 3 is already used in current Apple devices.

It is important to know that Thunderbolt is built around PCI Express (PCIe) and DisplayPort. This is why Thunderbolt 3 cables and accessories are incompatible with “clean” USB-C ports (more precisely, with most of them, we will discuss this in more detail below).

Thunderbolt 3

PCIe offers tremendous bandwidth — large amounts of data travel across multiple links at once. This is why Thunderbolt 3 is so fast. But that also means that Thunderbolt 3 accessories only work with a Thunderbolt 3 port. Why? Because USB-C does not use PCIe in its work. So if you plug a Thunderbolt 3 accessory into a USB-C port, it simply won’t work. there is no PCIe controller in the USB-C port!

In other words, Thunderbolt 3 has additional hardware compared to the more mainstream and, accordingly, simpler USB-C. It is important to know that USB-C accessories and cables are Thunderbolt 3-compatible.

All Thunderbolt 3 are USB-C ports. But the opposite is not true: not all USB-C ports are Thunderbolt 3 ports.

usb c thunderbolt

However, there is one nice “but” here … Yes, you cannot use most Thunderbolt 3 devices with a USB-C port. But the opposite is true – you can connect a USB-C device to Thunderbolt 3, tk. Thunderbolt 3 fully supports USB-C. That is, for example, if you connect a USB-C hard drive to your MacBook Pro, everything will work flawlessly. In other words, this issue is irrelevant for Mac owners – all peripherals with USB-C are compatible.

usb-c thunderbolt

And here’s another thing – at the beginning of 2018, things got more complicated (but also more enjoyable). The fact is that Intel has introduced a new controller for Thunderbolt 3 called Titan Ridge. It retains Thunderbolt 3 bandwidth (40 Gbps), and compatible accessories have reverse USB-C support. This means Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 accessories will work when plugged into the USB-C port. Yes, the speed will not be the same – but it’s better than nothing. Another thing is that no one really advertises this function, so before buying this or that accessory, you will have to study the materiel.

♥ BY TOPIC: How to open closed tabs in Safari on Mac (macOS): 4 ways.

Thunderbolt 3 Benefits

Thunderbolt 3 is without doubt the most powerful and versatile port on the market today. Compared to the previous version of the interface, the transmission speed has doubled. Thunderbolt 3 allows you to very quickly connect docks, monitors, laptops and other accessories together.

Another advantage of Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C is its serial connectivity. This connector can connect up to 6 peripheral devices (for example, monitors or external drives), connecting them to each other using cables. All daisy-chained devices will be available to run on your Mac. USB-C doesn’t have this option. connecting thunderbolt 3 monitors

High bandwidth allows you to connect four 4K monitors or two 6K monitors to your Mac at once. Needless to say, it is precisely Thunderbolt’s capabilities that allow such professional solutions to be implemented. It will undoubtedly be appreciated by professionals who process photos and videos. And the MacBook Pro 16 even has two of these controllers. And through Thunderbolt 3, you can directly connect monitors with a DisplayPort port, and an adapter is required for HDMI / VGA connectors.

The transfer rate is so fast that it takes less than a minute to copy 14 hours of HD video. It will take the same amount of time to transfer 10 thousand music tracks or 25 thousand photos.

One compact connector can not only transfer video and data, but also charge devices. The modern implementation uses the USB-C interface, which is very user-friendly. Energy can be transmitted through it in two directions. That is, both the connected device and the one connected to it can be recharged. In total, Thunderbolt 3 supports up to 100W of power, which makes it possible to connect multiple powerful devices through one cable and simultaneously recharge them.

The use of the USB-C interface makes Thunderbolt 3 a truly versatile solution. Now you can connect almost any device to the port using a single cable, but devices with Thunderbolt 2 require an adapter. It is now much easier to connect Apple Thunderbolt 3 devices and iOS / iPadOS devices together. The USB-C port is perfect for connecting a variety of modern accessories and external drives. Adapters and adapters are still needed to connect to legacy interfaces, but the compatibility between them has been preserved.

09/10/2020 by ALOK DAS

It seems that the days when laptops were equipped with many ports for connecting a wide variety of peripherals are irrevocably gone. More and more universal solutions are being used. So, through the USB-C port, you can both transfer data and a video image, and recharge. But what if the number of a wide variety of devices (flash drives, memory cards, USB-gadgets) significantly exceeds the number of universal laptop ports? And how to ensure the compatibility of old interfaces with the new one? Multiport adapters come to the rescue, such as the Satechi Multi-Port Adapter 4K with Ethernet V2.

No external power is required for the adapter to operate – it will receive everything it needs from a connected computer or laptop via a reversible USB-C connector (compatible with Thunderbolt 3), which allows you to simultaneously use 5 peripheral devices, 2 memory cards, and also connect to an Ethernet local network … In addition, the functionality of the USB-C interface is also not lost: the adapter is equipped with a pass-through port of this type, allowing, for example, to recharge a compatible device.

The microSD card slot has been slightly redesigned. Now, when the media is placed correctly, you can feel a click, which is a notification of the correct location of the drive.

The multiport adapter allows you to transfer a picture with 4K resolution through the HDMI port. To do this, you just need to connect the cable from the adapter to the monitor and get a clear image. At maximum resolution, a frequency of 30 Hz is provided. For the circuit to work, it is best to use an HDMI 2.0 cable and connect directly from the adapter to the monitor’s HDMI port. Displaying a picture with a resolution of 1080p is possible at a frequency of 144 Hz.
