Push notifications have become one of the best interface solutions that Apple has brought to the masses. Nearby are only a mouse and screens with multi-touch.
But judging by the annual upgrades of this function, no one has figured out how they should work and at the same time not interfere: they try to group, give access to customization and restrict to modes like “Do Not Disturb”.
Talk about random clicks. This is the most annoying notification problem that no one solves.
Messages come unexpectedly and there’s nothing to be done about it.
One way to catch a person by surprise
Are you going to click the “Back” or “Change” button at the top of the application, and instead open a message that I really didn’t want to answer now. It rarely happened to me, but because of this, somewhere deep in the subconscious, I always work with the top of the screen carefully.
The situation may simply be out of place when you are engaged in an important task, but then you accidentally read an invitation to a meeting: now you have to get distracted by time management. And if there is not enough RAM, then the first application will also be reset.
Displays are growing, so every tap counts
The names are large, but some elements for something are still inserted at the very top.
In iOS 10, Apple Music received a redesign, which then expanded throughout the operating system. A lot of space, card menus, animation layers. Gigantic headlines became the most noticeable detail.
They take up a lot of useless space. Therefore, the large names of applications and sections are justified, if only there is nothing more to click on at the top.
Larger display – further up the upper buttons. It is inconvenient to reach for them: the more often you have to press, the more likely it is to drop the smartphone. Random shifts make things worse.
The top of most applications is very active.
Here are just the system elements that force you to pull your hands and unexpectedly open notifications:
• back
• edit
• Add
• Share
• Search line
• Page up
• Context menu
• Log in to your account settings.
It’s impossible to bring them all down. Especially considering the fact that the lower part is now occupied by a huge bar of the “Home” strip for X-models and newer. If you take all the safe areas of the display that Apple itself prescribes, there is not enough living space for pushes.
Framing tetris from buttons is not an option
An example on the right is unlikely to be able to use
I’m not an interface designer, but we all consider ourselves that way when something is wrong. Threw options, how to solve the problem.
Make cards smallerand omit the interactive elements a bit. Swipe for the control center can be returned down and then a safe zone will remain for notifications.
Remove active buttons from the top. To do this, you will have to rewrite the application logic, which is somehow possible at the system level, but for other applications it is unrealistic.
Move the pushies to another place or redesign them. The VK application had an interesting notification function with the output of text in the status bar. The information is visible, but you definitely won’t hit it by accident. Only with the arrival of the bang did it become useless.
Make preanimation of notifications at the system level. iOS “revived” due to hundreds of small active elements that give an almost tactile feel of what is happening on the screen. Pop-up cards can also be pumped. For example, if microseconds before they appear, make small movements from above. Or first show the push tongue, and after a moment push it fully.
Introduce micro-delay from accidental clicks. Ideal option, in my opinion. Because disabling the responsiveness of the window for a moment is simple, but it will be noticeable only to those who really did not want to click. All the rest simply will not get ahead of freezing touches while they drag their fingers until notification. It will be important only to calculate the time, so that the intentional pressing still worked.
Hold to avoid disaster
So far, the situation will be saved if you touch an unwanted notification, but have not yet removed your finger from the screen. With a long push hold, it transforms into a response window. Close it on the cross and the message will remain unread.
For other cases, there is no solution. We’ll have to answer, make appointments, make excuses to the boss or wife.
IOS interface time to redo
In fact, what we now see in our smartphones is iOS 7 on steroids. Apart from the iPad, seven years ago, the largest screen for it was only 4 inches in size against the current 4.7-6.5.
The problems associated with large screens and bangs have accumulated a lot. The percentage of charge is visible only in the notification center; two hands were needed to call him from above; and the contextual return button is, in principle, no longer relevant.
The planned functions are divided into releases every year, because OS stability and the user base are now a priority. I think this is the right direction. True, radical changes are now waiting longer.
So there will be no miracle with the release of the next version. It’s good if they solve the main problem of “dialers” and transfer it to the pushy when the screen is on.
This will make the problem of accidental clicks even more dangerous, but there will be something to fix in iOS 15.
