In November 2020, another smartwatch was presented – Amazfit Bip U… The device differs from other brothers in the “Bip” line with improved display and additional functions. Their general list is really interesting, but we will tell you how the device ended up in this review.

Amazfit Bip U delivery set
The watch comes in a flat and compact white cardboard box with a picture of the gadget itself. The name of the device (the inscription Amazfit Bip U) is applied with a special paint that changes its shade depending on the angle.
The watch itself is packed with a bracelet in a moisture-absorbing film and placed in a recess in the cardboard core.
The kit also includes the same magnetic charging and detailed instructions in several languages, including Russian.
The black magnetic charging has an oval shape. There are two contacts in the recess. Attachment to the case is carried out using multipolar magnets in the watch and in the charger.
Amazfit Bip U design
The design of Amazfit Bip U practically repeats the appearance of other representatives of the “Bip” line. The robust plastic housing is rectangular with rounded corners.
On the right side there is a single physical button, pressing which is used to unlock the watch, wake up the screen, return to the previous menu, scroll the screen (up and down) during the workout and pause it (you must press and hold the button).
In addition, you can set the wheel press for quick access to a function when pressed for a long time. The wheel button rotates, but the clock functions are not tied to this action.
Below the screen you can see the name of the watch manufacturer. The watch has added an external elegance, but at the same time the corners of the screen can generate glare.
On the back, on a circular platform, you can see the updated BioTracker 2 PPG biometric sensor with a dual sensor, an SpO2 sensor and a pair of charging contacts. Placement is at a slight elevation to help provide improved skin contact.
The complete strap is made of soft silicone and has an adjustable length of 76-118 mm. The strap itself can be detached and is compatible with other Amazfit Bip models. Moreover, the watch can be fitted with any other standard watch straps, including metal and magnetic.
The Amazfit Bip U is available in three color options: black, pink and green. In this case, Amazfit decided not to be sprayed with numerous options, leaving the classic, clearly feminine and versatile stylish color.
Amazfit Bip U screen
With its display, this model is clearly different from its brothers. It uses not the classic transflective screen for the series, but a bright color TFT touchscreen with a diagonal of 1.43 inches (previous models had a display with a diagonal of 1.28 inches). Its shape turned out to be slightly elongated, which is why the resolution is a little strange – 320 × 302 pixels (the screens of previous models of the Bip line had a resolution of 176 × 176 pixels).
The increase in the number of pixels has clearly improved the clarity of the image. And it became possible to place more elements on the screen. The dot density is 305 PPI.
The glass is protected by the third generation 2.5D tempered Gorilla Glass and the anti-fingerprint protection is provided by an oleophobic coating. And you will need it – touch control is based on frequent finger touches and swipes.
But the watch did not receive the Always-On Display function, its operation on a TFT screen would lead to increased power consumption. You can set the screen backlight to automatically when you raise your wrist, and you can set the screen off time by setting the interval from 5 to 15 seconds.

Amazfit Bip U software
To fully work with the watch and activate it, you need to install the manufacturer’s proprietary application, Zepp (for iOS, for Android). To synchronize with a smartphone, you need to press a button on the watch, add the device in the program, then scan the barcode from the watch, and then confirm the connection by phone.
The Zepp app itself is actively being developed by the manufacturer, becoming a single information and control center for numerous wearable electronics from Amazfit. When you connect your watch for the first time, you may need to update its firmware, which, of course, you should agree with.
The application includes a store of available watch faces, but its main purpose is to fine-tune the behavior of watches and applications for information conclusions. Also in Zepp, you can see all the statistics collected through monitoring: stress level, steps, stress, sleep, etc. The information is presented in a rather detailed way using a variety of graphs. The application has a Russian interface and it’s easy to understand it. Unfortunately, the closed operating system does not allow third-party applications to be installed on Amazfit Bip series products.
The shell of the watch itself works by analogy with the Bip S and Bip S Lite. Swiping up on the home screen opens Action Center, and swiping down opens Control Center. From here you can quickly access Do Not Disturb modes, screen brightness, settings and alarms.
Swiping left or right from the home screen takes you to activity goals, heart rate, PAI, weather, and music controls. However, the user can change the order of the pages in the Zepp application at his own discretion.
You may need the side button to end your workouts (press and hold) or to return to the previous menu if you don’t want to use the swipe gesture.
Functions and capabilities of Amazfit Bip U
Smart watches entice many users with the ability to change watch faces.
In this regard, Amazfit Bip U does not lag behind – there are four built-in options in total and more than 40 can be found online in the Zepp app. It will not be difficult to choose an option that suits your mood or needs, including an animated one. It is possible to personalize your watch face with your own photos. And a couple of built-in options received a modular system – you can form a dial from information blocks that is precisely tuned to your needs.
Amazfit Bip U supports notifications of incoming calls and from applications, has its own stopwatch, timer, Pomodoro tracker, phone search, alarm clock, world clock, weather forecast, can control the camera and music.
The watch shows no more than 10 notifications, just like Bip S, Bip S Lite. There is no microphone in the watch – an incoming call can only be rejected or answered with a template SMS. To do this, swipe across the screen and select an action option.
Modern man cannot afford to avoid activity. Such a watch will become an irreplaceable assistant in numerous workouts.
More than 60 sports modes are supported, including running, walking, cycling, yoga, jumping rope, swimming, cricket and many more. They are grouped into 10 categories.
Bip U will record all the data about the current exercises to be analyzed later. The watch checks the distance traveled, monitors the change in heart rate, counts the calories burned. In the event of an increased heart rate, the watch will immediately notify its owner, recommending to reduce the load. Bip U are able to record tracks, but only through the use of a GPS smartphone – they do not have their own navigation equipment.
An important feature of the watch is the ability to measure the oxygen level in the blood. The updated optical sensor BioTracker 2 helps in this.
It can be used to numerically evaluate the oxygen saturation of the blood. This is important both for a general assessment of health status, especially during the coronavirus epidemic, and during intense training or in high altitude conditions. The watch will help you understand the reason for your poor health. Getting a result below 90% after several measurements is a reason to consult a doctor.
Amazfit Bip U is able to quite accurately detect sleep phases, including light and deep sleep, REM, wakefulness and deep sleep.

The watch is capable of continuous 24-hour monitoring, the results of which are displayed in the Zepp app. You can set the interval for automatic measurement: 1 minute, 5, 10 or 30 minutes, or manually measure the heart rate.
Zepp evaluates health based on a whole group of collected data: heart rate, duration of activity and more. An individual rating is formed for each user.
Modern man is highly susceptible to various stresses. Amazfit Bip U helps fight them with special monitoring. The gadget starts breathing training, helping to relax at the required moment.
And for women, the menstrual cycle tracking feature will be useful. By entering periods of critical days and ovulation into your smartwatch, you can receive timely notifications, planning your life and avoiding problems.
Autonomy of Amazfit Bip U (how long does the battery hold)
Amazfit Bip U received a 230 mAh battery. The manufacturer claims that the battery can provide up to nine days of battery life in the following daily mode:
- Automatic heart rate measurement every 10 minutes;
- 200 screen activations;
- A half-hour run and two measurements of the level of oxygen in the blood;
- 50 notifications.
If you set the automatic heart rate measurement interval once a minute, activate sleep tracking, sleep quality and stress monitoring, increase the number of notifications to 100, increase the brightness, then the watch will last 4-5 days.
To fully charge the device, on average, it will take 1 hour and 45 minutes of interaction with the magnetic pad.
Amazfit Bip U water resistance
The watch has received the standard water resistance for its line up to 50 meters, however, it is not recommended to swim with the device in salt water.
The watch comes in handy while swimming, tracking your movements and keeping track of your achievements. But diving deep in them or doing high-speed water sports is still not worth it.

Comparison of Amazfit Bip U with its fellows in the line is inevitable, especially since the price is not very different. Initially, the success of this watch series was based on the use of a transflective screen, with a low resolution, but perfectly readable in the sun. The Bip U model has become a kind of experiment. The user was offered a brighter and clearer screen due to the abandonment of some functions (GPS) and a slightly reduced battery life. But the heart rate sensor has improved and it became possible to check the level of oxygen in the blood, which is rare for devices in this price category. With the help of Bip U, the manufacturer enriches its product line even more, making it as interesting as possible for users with different needs.
