Please be aware that after you send an email with an attachment using this feature, the recipient will have 30 days to open it. After this period, the recipient will no longer be able to view the sent file. But the letter itself, of course, is not going anywhere.

Since the feature allows you to send files up to 5GB in size, once set up, you can send almost anything. However, you should be aware that there is still a 1 TB storage limit. If you have sent a lot of files and their size has exceeded this limit, you will need to wait a bit until some files expire. This will unload the storage.

The recipient of the letter will receive a message with a link (with the inscription Tap to download) to download the attached file from iCloud.

How to use Mail Drop on iPhone?

You will not find a dedicated button in your mail client to access the Mail Drop function. When your iPhone detects that the file you have selected for an attachment is too large to be sent normally via the Mail app, it will ask you if you want to deliver the attachment using Mail Drop instead.

Here are step-by-step instructions on how to send a large file from your iPhone:

1. Open the Mail app on your iPhone.

2. Click on the create new email icon located in the lower right corner of the screen.

3. Enter the email address of the person you want to send this email to, enter your message and add the required attachments (from the Photos app, Cameras, Files app, or scan an image, see screenshot).

4. Click on the blue circle with the up arrow in the upper right corner of the screen.

5. You will see a pop-up message that the attachments may be too large to be sent by email, and therefore it might be better to send them using Mail Drop. Click on “Use Mail Drop”to send a bulky email.

That’s all. Your email will be sent, and iCloud will take over the storage of the attachment. The file will be available for viewing by the recipient for the next 30 days. And the email will look quite normal, sent in standard mode (see screenshot below).

How to use Mail Drop on Mac?

Sending an email with a bulky attachment on a Mac is easy too. And the same Mail Drop function will help with this. Here’s what you should do:

1. Launch the Mail app on your Mac.

2. Click ⌘Command + N on your keyboard to compose a new message, or click the compose new message icon.

3. Click the paperclip icon to add an attachment to the message. Now select the required files on your Mac and click “Select a file“.

4. When you’re ready to send your message, click on the paper airplane icon.

5. If the attached files are too large, the application will prompt you to send them using Mail Drop. A pop-up window will appear; click on “Use Mail Drop“.

The recipient will see the email in a standard format. And to open files, you just need to click on them.

If you are having trouble sending large files with Mail Drop on your Mac, check if this feature is actually enabled.
