How precise volume and brightness controls work on macOS

15/10/2020 by ALOK DAS

The operating system for Apple computers is fraught with many useful “chips”. Only some of them are reported in press releases, while the rest are gradually found by users on their own. In this article, we will talk about a rather trivial function – volume control. Even in this simple action, the developers from Cupertino were able to add something useful.

♥ BY TOPIC: How to change screenshots folder on Mac (macOS).

Apple keyboards for personal computers and built-in keyboards in MacBook have dedicated volume buttons (F10, F11, F12). when you click on them, a toast notification appears with a volume bar, similar to the notification in iOS. Keyboards from other manufacturers usually have volume buttons as well.

There are 16 divisions in total on this scale. But what if you need to adjust the volume more precisely? For this, key combinations are provided ⇧Shift + ⌥Alt (Option) + F11 and ⇧Shift + ⌥Alt (Option) + F12…

When using these combinations, each division will be divided into 4 more points, as in the screenshot below.

The same will happen if you use similar keyboard shortcuts to adjust the brightness of the screen, but instead of F11 and F12, you need to use F1 and F2, respectively:

How to adjust sound quietly on Mac (no extra signature sound effect)

When adjusting the volume, the computer emits a characteristic sound, which in some situations may be very unsuitable. To do this, you can use the following keyboard shortcuts: ⇧Shift + F11 and ⇧Shift + F12… You can completely disable this sound effect in the system settings. To do this, you need to open the application System settings go to section Sound → tab Sound effects and disable the option “Beep when volume changes “…

MacOS also assigns different volume levels for built-in speakers and connected headphones / speakers. If you adjust the volume in the laptop to minimum, then plug in the headphones and accidentally unplug them, then the MacBook will not scream with the built-in speakers, since the volume will return to the minimum value.

The volume level can be adjusted even from the Terminal, for this use the following command:

osascript -e "set volume х"

Instead x put value off 0 before 7… This command can be used in conjunction with Automator to fine tune your system.

Why did Apple hide auto brightness settings

The main reason is saving battery power in the iPhone. Apple hid the switch “Auto brightness”so that users are less likely to disable this feature, because even the description says: “Turning off auto brightness can shorten battery life”.

It is worth noting Apple’s feature version “Auto brightness” quite comfortable. Like Android, iOS has a slider for customization, but instead of fixed brightness, it sets its approximate range. This means that even if you set the brightness to a low level, the screen will still be well lit in dazzling sunlight.

A very convenient feature, however, it does not always work correctly. Sometimes you need to make minimal changes to the settings, but with the release of iOS 11 you will have to do a few steps. If you, for example, watch a long film, it will be very inconvenient.

Of course, all this can be called ordinary nit-picking. Nevertheless, for people who are accustomed to setting the brightness on their own, placing this function in such an uncomfortable, completely non-intuitive menu will be an unpleasant surprise.

The control center first appeared in iOS 7 and was Apple’s response to competition from Android and the jailbreak community. In the eleventh version of the mobile operating system, presented at the WWDC 2017 conference, the Control Center was significantly redone.

The user can choose between four modes of light intensity, ideal for various situations.

The low-intensity mode (first division) is best suited in cases where too bright light whitens everything around and it is very difficult to examine small objects at close range. In addition, a lower brightness of the flashlight will save battery power of the smartphone. Mode medium and high intensity should be selected if necessary to illuminate objects in the distance.

It is noteworthy that other elements of the Control Center received similar functionality. For example, by long pressing the camera icon, you can select the shooting mode,
