I must say that there are few such routers on the market. But Tenda decided to release its own version of the router with support for 4G LTE, which in parallel also supports an Ethernet connection. In fact, the manufacturer has created a whole line of such devices, inexpensive, stylish and functional.
In our review, we will focus on Tenda 4G03. This router has a built-in 3G / 4G module, which requires a SIM card from a mobile operator. The device can connect to a cellular network, and then distribute the Internet to clients both via Wi-Fi and via cable.
But Tenda 4G03 can work as a classic router – there is a regular WAN port for this. True, the Wi-Fi network operates at 2.4 GHz and provides speeds up to 300 Mbps. Usually this is enough, otherwise the older models of the line give more opportunities. But the proprietary function of intelligent coverage Beamforming using a directional beam Tenda 4G03 received – this will make the Wi-Fi connection more stable.
In any case, Tenda 4G03 will easily prove its worth. There are places where there are no Internet providers, or they do not provide sufficient quality service, but there is 4G coverage. Packing and delivery of Tenda 4G03
The box with the Tenda 4G03 router is made in the colors traditional for the manufacturer – it is black with orange inserts. The foreground shows the device itself in an upright position. Its main features are written on the side in the orange stripe. So already on the front side of the box it becomes clear what kind of device it is and how it looks. The side edges of the box reveal its specification.
The back side of the package is also made in black and orange tones and reveals in more detail the functionality of the device, including due to the scheme of its inclusion. To highlight the main advantages of Tenda 4G03, a comparative diagram was used, it can be seen that this is the youngest device in the line. And the pictures above show the main scenarios for using the router.
Inside the box, in addition to the device itself, you will find a minimal but sufficient set: a power supply, a network patch cord, a small brochure and a warranty card.
Tenda 4G03 design
Tenda traditionally pays a lot of attention to the appearance of its devices. But if ordinary routers have black color and curved edges in the form of wings, then Tenda 4G03 received a completely different look. The device has an oval-shaped platform on which the router is placed vertically. The section gradually decreases upward, so that the side faces also turned out to be not just rounded, but also curved. The main body material is white matte plastic, it looks sturdy and certainly not flimsy or cheap. The glossy insert on the upper platform adds variety.
The manufacturer’s logo is applied at the bottom of the front panel. In the upper part, there are light indicators. They are green, indicating the power of the router, the status of its connection to the Internet, the status of the Wi-Fi network, the connection of devices via Ethernet, as well as the indication of the signal strength of the 3G / 4G network.
But the ports and power buttons are located on the back of the device, at the very bottom. There you can see the power button, the connector for the power adapter, the RST / WPS button for resetting the settings, and a pair of ports: WAN / LAN and LAN.
Both ports are gray in color, so you can find out their purpose using the embossing on the case. Above, in the middle of the case, there is a plug that covers the compartment for connecting removable antennas.
At the bottom of the device there is a large sticker indicating the information necessary for operation (primary network name, password to it, IMEI, MAC, serial number). Here you can also find a mini-SIM card slot, which is very important for this device.
To use the modern nano-SIM standard, you will have to use an adapter.
The router stands on plastic legs, however, they do not provide a strong grip.
Configuring and managing Tenda 4G03
After connecting the router to the socket, insert the SIM card of your mobile operator with an activated mobile Internet tariff into the slot. Now press the power button of the device. After a few seconds, it will load and start distributing the Internet immediately. If your provider offers a wired Internet connection, then the cable must be connected to the WAN port of the router, having previously identified it using embossing on the case. The remaining port can be used to connect network devices.
So, the initial setup is done. You can see the Wi-Fi network with the name displayed on the sticker at the bottom of the case. When you connect to it, you will most likely be able to access the Internet if the operator’s SIM card is installed. But it is still better to carry out the initial configuration, whose principle is similar for most of Tenda’s routers. To do this, you need to connect to the device via Wi-Fi or using a network cable (such as is included in the package). And here are the steps required for this:
1. Connect the Tenda 4G03 router to the network, turn it on by pressing the power button on the back. The LED should light up green.
2. The router must have access to the Internet, for this a SIM card or an Internet provider cable must already be inserted into it. The success of the action will be signaled by the second indicator.
3. If your client device cannot connect to the router’s Wi-Fi network, then use an Ethernet cable by connecting it to the router’s port.
4. If you connect to the router via Wi-Fi, then the parameters of the primary network can be found on the sticker on the bottom of the case.
Usually the network name looks like Tenda_XXXXX. The username and password for accessing it are indicated next to it.
5. Navigate your browser to tendawifi.com or http://192.168.0.1. You will see the router’s quick setup wizard window.
6. Here you can configure the wireless connection of the router via a SIM card: set the profile name, its APN, parameters and authentication type.
7. The next window is for configuring Wi-Fi – set a name for the wireless network and a password to access it.
8. After rebooting the router, a network will be created with the name that you specified during setup.
9. And for a more detailed setup of Tenda 4G03, reconnect to the router’s network and go to tendawifi.com or http://192.168.0.1. For authorization, you will need the password you created.
Tenda 4G03 web management interface consists of several tabs, each of which has a number of corresponding parameters. Sections are moved to the left on the orange column.
Internet state… This is the default tab. Here you can see the scheme for turning on the router, the current data transfer rate, external IP address and the number of clients connected to the device. In a word, very general information.
Internet settings… This tab will show you the status of your Internet connection, as well as enable or disable mobile data (then you have to use cable access) and mobile data settings.
Wi-Fi settings… Here you can fine tune your wireless network. In addition to the usual change of its name and password, it is proposed to set a work schedule, select a channel and transmitter power.
SMS. This section is available only in the line of routers with support for mobile networks. Here you can configure the sending of SMS messages.
Guest network. The router makes it possible to create, in addition to the main network, a guest network, whose clients will be isolated from the resources of the main network. Tenda 4G03 allows you to set the period of operation of this network and limit access to it.
Parental control. This section will help parents and even inexperienced users to monitor the network operating time of devices. If necessary, you can limit the Internet surfing for certain clients.
VPN. For Tenda routers, the VPN server function is already the norm. You can connect to the device from the Internet by accessing the local network. On this tab, you can configure the server settings and see who is currently connected to it.
Advanced settings. In this section, numerous options are presented that will allow you to fine-tune your router: these are MAC address filtering, static routes, dynamic DNS and much more.
System settings. But more fundamental settings are collected in this section. It allows you to configure WAN and LAN, update the firmware, set the system time, view the logs and reboot the router.
How to work with Tenda 4G03 via mobile app
After connecting to the router via Wi-Fi network or Ethernet cable, launch the Tenda WiFi app (download for iOS, download for Android). The application will automatically identify the router and provide access to its management.
The utility interface is laconic, but quite functional. There are two tabs: Devices and Tools. The first one is relatively stingy with information – it’s just a list of devices currently connected to the router, indicating the current data transfer rates. The second tab contains more than 10 buttons, each of which is tied to a particular function (Blacklist, Wi-Fi Schedule, Guest network, Wi-Fi network name and password, etc.). When you click on the selected element, a window with its parameters will open. Thus, you can quite subtly, even from a smartphone, adjust the router to fit your needs or get information about its operation.
Tenda 4G03 router testing
If we evaluate the possible speeds, then Tenda 4G03 does not promise records, but the “highlight” of the router is different. It provides basic access to the network, according to the 802.11n standard, it is up to 300 Mbps. This is enough to provide the capabilities of 4G LTE. The maximum speed of this mobile Internet standard is 150 Mbps for download and 50 Mbps for download. For high speeds, it is necessary to use the 5G standard, but devices of a completely different class are capable of working with it.
During the tests, we first measured the speed on a phone connected to 4G. The measurements showed 19/16 Mbps. When connected to the Internet via a Tenda 4G03 router, the speed was slightly lower, 15/16 Mbit / s, which is not critical. If we talk about the coverage area of the Wi-Fi network, then the device shows itself quite well. At a distance of 12-15 meters from it, even through two wooden walls, the signal was almost maximum. An older model with two external antennas will provide improved coverage. Taking into account what we saw and the price of Tenda 4G03, we can safely assume that the router is fully justified.
Tenda 4G03 belongs to a rather rare class of devices. The user also gets the opportunity to use the mobile Internet as a source for his local wireless network. Tenda 4G03 may be the youngest representative of the line, but at the same time, you can get speeds up to 150 Mbps at the entrance, and clients can connect at speeds up to 300 Mbps. Here the 4G technology itself becomes the “bottleneck”. The router has shown itself to be quite productive, this solution is perfect for places remote from traditional providers. The hardware performance is enough to handle 32 devices. It is worth noting the simplicity of setting up the router, the presence of a mobile application. We can safely recommend this device if your network in a small space requires a safety net in the form of an additional mobile Internet provider.
