At its summer WWDC 2020 presentation, Apple put a special emphasis on the new announced features of the AirPods Pro wireless headphones, of which Spatial Audio was the most intriguing. This software development should provide users with the ability to watch videos and listen to music with a realistic immersion effect without special equipment.

What is Spatial Audio in AirPods Pro?
The developers themselves compare the user experience when listening to audio content in surround sound mode with going to the cinema – surround sound comes from all directions at the same time and changes with every movement of the user’s head relative to the parent device (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, etc.). And this is a really useful feature, giving you new sensations that are easily distinguishable from conventional stereo and even 5.1 surround sound.

How does Spatial Audio work in AirPods Pro?
To create this effect, Apple uses special software technologies that use the device’s accelerometer and gyroscope to create a kind of sound field, inside which the user’s head and gadget are located. This creates the feeling that instead of two headphones (as in ordinary stereo mode), the listener receives waves from a multitude of virtual sources placed around them, as a result of which even watching a movie on a smartphone can become a powerful alternative to going to the cinema.

What devices support Spatial Audio?
The feature is only available to owners of top-end AirPods Pro, and support is also expected for AirPods Studio, which may launch in the fall of 2020.
Spatial Audio requires iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 or later. In addition, the AirPods Pro themselves must be updated to the latest firmware. Please note that AirPods Pro firmware updates automatically while charging.

How do I enable spatial audio in AirPods Pro?
There are two ways to activate the function:

2. Open Control Center, press and hold the volume slider, and then tap the corresponding icon.

What formats does Spatial Audio support?
Naturally, not every video on YouTube or a movie downloaded from the CAMRip torrent can be watched in surround sound, this requires content with 1.5 or 1.7 surround sound, as well as Dolby Atmos.
The Spatial Audio feature in AirPods Pro was not in vain that it was separately noted as part of the June WWDC announcement and will certainly not only be massively used by Apple headphone owners, but also encourage content creators to record surround sound in appropriate formats. Thus, spatial audio can be added to the list of reasons to upgrade to a new version of iOS for those who have not yet done so.
