How to Create a Smart Finder Folder on Mac
To get started, open the Finder app on your Mac. Next, in the menu bar, select File → New smart folder.
Now we need to specify the area of search – for example, This mac.

Smart folder by file type
The first available selection criteria is a type. In the drop-down menu next to it, you can specify your choice – for example, a PDF file, image, music, film, text, etc.
Example: You want to make a special folder for all the videos that appear on your Mac. Very convenient – because now they are scattered across dozens of folders, and sometimes quickly navigate them is not easy. All you need to do is select an option. Movie in the context menu. Smart folder by date
If the type is not what you need … maybe another criterion, a date, will do? In this case, several options are offered at once – the last opening date, the last change date, or the creation date.
Sorting by date is a great solution if, for example, you often need access to recently created files on a Mac. In this case, select the option Latest Opening Date. And if you need all the files that opened this week, just select the option in the drop-down menu on the right This week.

Smart folder by name
If you need files in the name of which have the same words – feel free to create a smart folder with the criterion Name and put in it all the files whose name contains / matches / starts / ends with certain letters.
For example, we need all the files whose name contains the word Apple. Select in the first context menu Namein the second – Contains, in third – Apple.

Smart folder by content
Of course, file names do not always contain the word you need. That is why for smart folders on the Mac came up with another filter – by content. Select the option in the first context menu Content, enter a keyword, for example, Passwordif suddenly you forgot where the document is stored in which you wrote down the password from Apple ID or Vkontakte a long time ago, and use Keychain not yet able.

Smart folder with Other
If none of the criteria above suits you – do not worry. The smart folder has a heavy-duty option in stock Other. Select it – and you will see a window with dozens of filters, the existence of which you could not even think of!
For example, search by file extension.
Or Flash, i.e. sort by whether the photo would be taken with a flash.
Among the “other” parameters are the album name, URL, and much, much more.

Of course, most often one setting for a smart folder (for example, all videos) is enough. But do not forget that if you wish, the “smart” folder can be configured even more cunningly! For example, for the same presentations, you can add one more criterion – to display in the smart folder only files for 1 last month. To do this, simply click the icon “a plus”.
Play around with the settings – it is quite possible that the result with a more advanced setting will suit you even more. If not, just remove the filter by clicking on the minus sign.

Save your smart folder
After all the settings are made, do not forget to save your new smart folder. macOS will ask for its name and location.
