In iOS 13, Apple turned on the Picture in Picture mode, but only for the iPad. In iOS 14 (a detailed overview of new features), this feature has become available for the iPhone. Thanks to it, users can, for example, simultaneously watch videos or make calls using Facetime, as well as perform some other actions on their device. But here’s how to use the “picture-in-picture” functionality on the iPhone.

How to enable the picture-in-picture feature on iPhone
Picture-in-Picture usually works with applications that play video content, but when it comes to third-party applications, application developers must also implement support for this feature.
For example, while video from YouTube in the “picture in picture” mode can be viewed only from the Safari browser, the official YouTube application does not support this function.
In compatible applications, including Apple applications, such as Apple TV, you can click on the picture-in-picture icon at the top of the application to activate this mode, or simply double-click the video with two fingers.
Picture-in-Picture in Safari works with almost any video, and website developers do not need to implement any additional support for this feature. On a site with a video, for example, on YouTube, start playing the video, go to full screen mode, and then click the picture-in-picture icon or double-click the video with two fingers.
You can exit the Picture-in-Picture mode and return to the full-screen mode of the open application by simply touching the same icon in the upper right corner of the Picture-in-Picture window or by double-clicking with two fingers. You can close the PIP window and its associated application by clicking the X in the left corner.

But there are some types of videos that do not work with this function, for example, videos embedded in web pages. Therefore, some configuration of certain websites may be required before such a video can be used in picture-in-picture mode. However, the function is compatible with embedded videos from YouTube and Vimeo, so sites using these embeds will have content compatible with PIP.
Please note that you cannot use the picture-in-picture mode on one website and then open another site in the Safari browser. This closes the picture-in-picture window. Although other applications other than Safari, the function may use.

How to use the picture-in-picture function in a FaceTime video call
Picture-in-picture works with FaceTime in iOS 14, and this is perhaps the most useful way to use the feature. In iOS 13, if you need to do something on your phone, you have to drag your finger across the FaceTime window, which pauses the transfer of your video to the person you are talking to.
In iOS 14, when you drag your finger across the FaceTime window in the same way, the call is automatically minimized to the picture-in-picture window. It remains visible even when accessing other applications so that you and the other person can continue the conversation. And the iPhone itself is becoming available for parallel use.
You can reduce or enlarge the FaceTime window (with the usual gesture with two fingers, just as you enlarge or reduce the image) to resize it from large to medium or small, and then return to the standard one. And if you just click once, the picture-in-picture window will expand back to the full screen size of the iPhone. ”You can also use your finger to move the picture-in-picture window to the best place on the screen for it.

How to resize the window of the picture-in-picture function
You can double-click on any picture-in-picture window or use gestures to resize the picture-in-picture window. In total, iOS gives you the opportunity to choose one of three sizes: small, medium and large.
A small window has the size of two application icons, the average size is about three application icons, and the window height is one and a half times larger. The largest window is eight app icons in size.
All windows are displayed in landscape orientation on the iPhone’s main screen, except for FaceTime, which is displayed in portrait mode.
Picture-in-picture windows can be used with almost any application or on the home screen. Small and medium windows can be moved to any corner of the iPhone screen, while a large Picture-in-Picture window can only be placed at the top or bottom of the screen.

How to minimize the picture-in-picture function window outside the screen
You can remove the picture-in-picture window of any size on the iPhone using the usual drag and drop, moving the item off the screen.
When the picture-in-picture window is moved outside the screen, you will continue to hear sound from the video or a FaceTime call, but this element will not be displayed on the iPhone display.
