Lines and cells in notes (notebook sheet) on iPhone and iPad: why are they needed and how to do it?

In the Notes app on iPhone and iPad, you can customize the display of lines and cells. An imitation of a notebook sheet in Notes can help you draw a straight line, square, vector graphics, as well as write down a note exactly and much more.

Lines and cells appear on the Stage below the text. At the same time, Notes on Mac does not yet support this handy feature.

In order to use this feature, you need to update your device to iOS 11 (or later) and connect Notes to iCloud, or save notes on the device itself, since many additional functions of the application will not work with other email services.

What is it for and how to display lines and cells in “Notes”

Prior to iOS 11, Notes displayed just a blank canvas.

Each note in iOS 11 and later can have a different line and cell style. In addition, Notes lets you define a default style that will be applied to all new notes. As mentioned earlier, lines / squares can be used as a virtual ruler for drawing straight lines and square shapes.

Lines / cells only appear when writing notes or drawing using your finger, Apple Pencil, or third-party stylus… Any text typed in the note will be displayed over the lines / cells.
