The audio market is undergoing major changes, albeit subtly. Increasingly, adults simply do not have enough time to receive this kind of information, and our children have been sitting in phones or tablets from almost two or three years old. And sometimes the sounds made by the characters of cartoons and games are very annoying to others. Usually, parental concern in this case is limited to the requirement to turn off the sound or put on headphones. But don’t you care what device will form the sound stream to your children?
After all, there is one implicit problem – loudness. It is tempting to make it higher in order to plunge into what is happening as much as possible. In the pursuit of “louder, louder,” a growing body can injure the hearing aid. Unfortunately, it is difficult to control what is happening – you can only guess what volume level a child has in the headphones. But manufacturers saw a potential problem and launched several headphones with a volume limiter. In this review, we are going to talk about the JVC HA-KD5, designed especially for kids.
When choosing children’s headphones, users rely on proven and understandable criteria: workmanship, including colors, bright and catchy color, convenience, absence of strong odors, optimal size. It’s no secret that sometimes it is the design that plays a decisive role, overshadowing the very characteristics of the device. In the ideal case, all factors are present, and the high volume blocking system is a convincing reason to choose this particular device. This is exactly what the JVC HA-KD5 headphones turned out to be.
The earbuds are delivered in a transparent plastic blister that allows you to see the device from the outside. On the blue base is the manufacturer’s name – JVC, and inside the bundled cable is hidden. You can open the box without cutting – carefully making a tear at the back along the perforation line. Inside, in addition to the headphones themselves and a couple of sheets of documentation, you will find 4 sheets of stickers. Obviously, in this way, the manufacturer showed attention to the users of his product – to children. With the help of stickers, you can give your headphones more personality: there are elongated colored ribbons and three-dimensional drawings. This marketing move is welcome.
The JVC HA-KD5 headphones do their best to attract attention. The manufacturer offers several color options, but each of them is still based on a combination of two colors: raspberry-purple, red-yellow, purple-lime and yellow-blue.
The main material of the earbuds is plastic, its matte finish will not collect fingerprints. Note that the device has no unpleasant odor. The design of the headphones is simple – two cups are attached to the rounded headboard. The headboard does not have a soft backing, but it can move apart, increasing its length – the maximum option is enough even for an adult. But the width of the bow is sufficient, which makes the structure strong. And this area can be useful for placing the same stickers.
The lower part of the bow is made thicker, while its outer part has been given a different bright color. But inside, its color remains the same. I must say that the whole structure looks stable – nothing dangles or falls off. The ear pads themselves are made of white artificial leather, the same color for all JVC HA-KD5 variants. There is a soft backing inside. For an adult’s ear, such a design frankly looks too small, but for a child it is just right – the ears will gently sink into the recess, which will give the ear pads the ability to cut off external sounds. At the bottom of each ear pads, a cable exit is made through colored plastic tubes. It itself is soft and its total length is 0.8 meters. It seems a little, but do not forget that the headphones are designed for children who have no special requirements for the cable length. This cable is quite enough for connecting to a phone lying in a bag or pocket. At the end of the cable was a gold-plated 3.5mm connector. Unfortunately, the fastening system is monolithic and will not allow replacement in case of a break in the cord. The manufacturer’s name is printed on the inside of the ear cushions, and the protruding points allow you to distinguish the left earphone from the right one.
Inside the cups are 30 mm neodymium speakers, whose maximum volume is deliberately limited to 85 dB. When shaping the sound of the headphones, JVC engineers focused on the middle frequencies, the bass is audible, but clearly softened, moreover, it also sags at maximum volume. High frequencies are transmitted quite well. Headphones are clearly trying to cater to all the addictions a little, giving out the maximum expected from an inexpensive universal product. The limiter itself works very simply – when the headphones are connected, the sound in them will be initially reduced in volume, and its maximum level will not create problems for the ears.
Young users of JVC HA-KD5 in their reviews focus not so much on the sound quality as on the comfort of wearing – lightweight headphones do not press on their heads and do not fog up. At the same time, the level of sound insulation is quite high. It is hard not to pay attention to the bright product designed especially for children. Moreover, it makes it possible to be creative with its appearance, and is tactilely devoid of cheap plastic and an unpleasant smell.
The cost of the headphones is about 1200 rubles.
