The iPhone 13 / iPhone 13 Pro lineup hardly looks like a major upgrade. Of course, the new product surpasses its predecessor in almost all respects, but mostly only due to software “chips”.
♥ BY THEME: Comparison between iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 Pro (12 Pro Max).
As it is already becoming a tradition, the series of Apple smartphones is represented by four smartphones – a compact (13 mini), an “iPhone for the majority” (iPhone 13) and two professional models with additional camera modules (iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max).
In this post, we’ll be comparing the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Steel or aluminum? Comparison of designs and sizes of iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
The design of the iPhone 13 series has not become new – the trend was set by its predecessor, the iPhone 12. All representatives of the 2021 line are made in a single design, differing, in fact, in size and camera module. Smartphones repeat the features of last year’s model, and that, in turn, was inspired by either the iPhone 4, or the latest iPad Pro. A distinctive feature of this style is clear chopped edges. The corners of smartphones are rounded. The differences between the representatives of the line are in the material of the case. While the iPhone 13 has aluminum, which is the material used in the aerospace industry, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have a medical surgical stainless steel case.

The front panel is almost entirely dedicated to the screen. A distinctive feature of the last few generations of iPhones – a bang-shaped notch in the display for cameras, has been preserved. It is the same for all three models. Also, the front panel of these smartphones is protected by Ceramic Shield technology. The controls of the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are also in the same places: the volume and silence buttons on the left side, as well as the SIM slot, on the right side is the power button. The bottom edge is given to the speakers and the Lightning port.
Location of buttons and ports on iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max
The back panel of all these smartphones is made of glass. The traditional Apple logo in the shape of an apple flaunts in the middle. But the camera module clearly distinguishes the iPhone 13 from the iPhone 13 Pro. This site itself is located in the upper left corner. But in the iPhone 13, it is clearly smaller, and contains a pair of camera modules located diagonally from each other. In the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro, both the platform is larger, and the lenses themselves are more massive. Professional models received 3 cameras, they are arranged in a triangle. In addition to the flash, there is also a LiDAR module peephole on the platform, which the iPhone 13 lacks. The number of lenses is the main visual difference between the representatives of the Pro series and the base model.
Visual comparison of the sizes of iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
If you try to identify the difference between the three smartphones in size, then the iPhone Pro Max (6.7-inch screen diagonal) stands out clearly. It is 160.8 mm long, 78.1 mm wide and 7.65 mm thick. At the same time, the senior representative of the series weighs a lot – 238 g. But the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro (the screen diagonal of both smartphones is 6.1 inches) received the same geometric dimensions: 146.7 × 71.5 × 7.65 mm. Here are just the “proshka” weighs more – 203 g versus 173 g relative to the younger brother.
Comparison of screen sizes of iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
It’s worth noting here that all three smartphones are the same thickness – further proof of Apple’s commitment to a single design.
|Height, mm||Width, mm||Thickness, mm||Weight, g|
|iPhone 13 Pro Max||160.8||78.1||7.65||238|
|iPhone 13 Pro||146.7||71.5||7.65||203|
|iPhone 13 mini||131.5||64.2||7.65||140|
There are differences between models and color options. iPhone 13 has 5 color options, and its older brothers – 4. iPhone 13 is available in the following colors: shining star (white), dark night (black), blue, pink and red (PRODUCT)RED…
IPhone 13 colors
But the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max received calmer colors: silver, graphite, gold and sky blue.
IPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max colors
Output: Top models iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max differ in body material and number of cameras. This is where the main difference in design lies. The iPhone 13 has got its own color options, but there are a lot of them for the iPhone 13 Pro / iPhone 13 Pro Max.

IPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max display
All three models feature an OLED Super Retina XDR display. At the same time, the size of the diagonal screen of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro coincided – it is 6.1 inches. But the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a corresponding particle in the name for a reason. This is the largest representative of the line, its screen has a diagonal of 6.7 inches.
The screen resolution of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro is the same – it is 2532 × 1170 pixels, the density is 460 pixels per inch. The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a slightly higher resolution, which is explained by the screen size – 2778 × 1284 pixels, the density is almost the same as that of its counterparts – 458 pixels per inch. The displays of all smartphones support HDR, True Tone technology, P3 wide color gamut, tactile response to pressing. In HDR mode, the screen brightness reaches 1200 cd / m22…
But the representatives of the Pro series also have their own, obvious differences from the base model. The most important thing is the presence of ProMotion technology (in detail). It allows the display to raise the refresh rate up to 120Hz for the smoothest content display. And for a static picture, the frequency can be reduced down to 10 Hz, which clearly has a beneficial effect on the battery charge. iPhone 13 runs at a standard 60Hz frequency at all times.

– domenico panacea (@domenicopanacea) September 24, 2021
Another difference is the standard screen brightness. The iPhone 13 reaches 800 cd / m22, while the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max reaches 1000 cd / m22…
Output: There are no global differences between smartphone displays (apart from size). OLED screens in the iPhone 13 lineup are crisp and vibrant in their own right. But the Pro series models received an innovation – ProMotion technology. Thanks to it, working with a smartphone will become even more pleasant, and battery power will be saved. In addition, the Pro models received an increased standard brightness compared to the basic version. Obviously, their screens are better than those of the iPhone 13. And those who want to work with a large iPhone are given, in fact, the only option – the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Processor and performance of iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
Apple’s newest chip, the A15 Bionic, has arrived, as expected, in this generation of iPhones. It works in all iPhone 13s, there is no segmentation here. Smartphones are powered by a new 6-core processor, 4 of which are not as powerful as a couple of the others, but much more energy efficient. The 16-core Neural Engine is responsible for machine learning. However, the Pro models simply have to be more powerful than the base one. This is achieved, firstly, due to different amounts of RAM (4 GB LPDDR4X in the iPhone 13 and 6 GB LPDDR4X in the iPhone 13 Pro / 13 Pro Max), and, secondly, due to the different configuration of the GPU. The base iPhone has 4 cores, while the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have 5 cores. This extra core plays an important role.
All three smartphones received options with storage capacities of 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB. However, there is a 1TB drive option in the Pro line. Obviously, the use cases for these devices imply more active photography and filming and new volumetric formats, which will require more storage.
Output: All members of the iPhone 13 series are powered by the new fast A15 Bionic chip. However, the Pro models have increased processing power through additional RAM and graphics core. These two models received a variant with a very large 1TB storage, which the iPhone 13 lacks.

Cameras for iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max
The main emphasis in the Pro models is precisely on the capabilities of the cameras, it is obvious that the iPhone 13 will be inferior in this regard.
IPhone 13 cameras
IPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max cameras
Even visually, the iPhone 13 Pro has larger modules, and there are three of them, against two in the iPhone 13. But let’s look at the camera capabilities in more detail. Still, the iPhone 13 shoots at the level of modern flagships, largely due to perfect and powerful software algorithms.
The camera system in the iPhone 13 consists of two modules, each with a resolution of 12 megapixels. It is an f / 1.6 wide-angle camera and an f / 2.4 ultra wide-angle camera. Both iPhone 13 Pro models already have three cameras. In addition to the wide-angle at f / 1.5 and ultra-wide-angle at f / 1.8, there is also a telephoto at f / 2.8. All of them have a resolution of 12 megapixels.
IPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max cameras
All representatives of the series can work in Night mode, received support for Deep Fusion and advanced optical stabilization using the sensor shift method. Cameras have True Tone flash with Slow Sync function, and can work in Portrait mode, shaping bokeh and providing depth. All iPhone 13 cameras work with six portrait lighting options, can apply Photo Styles, and use Smart HDR 4 when taking photos.
Photographic Styles in iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max
But the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have their own features that the base iPhone 13 lacks. So, professional models allow macro shooting, can save a picture in Apple ProRAW format and use Night mode for portraits. An additional module expands the zoom capabilities. While the iPhone 13 has 2x optical zoom down and 5x digital zoom, both Pro models have 3x optical zoom, 2x optical zoom, which gives a 6x optical zoom range, while digital zoom reaches 15x.
An example of macro shooting on the iPhone 13 Pro
The basic capabilities of video shooting are the same. All three models are able to shoot 4K video, including HDR Dolby Vision at up to 60 frames / s; when filming, optical image stabilization is used by shifting the matrix. Slow motion video is recorded at 1080p at 120/240 fps. There is audio zoom, QuickTake function, “Timelapse” with image stabilization and “Timelapse” in Night mode, stereo sound. All smartphones have received a new “Cinema Effect” mode for shooting with a shallow depth of field. When using this mode, the smartphone itself recognizes the appearance of a new object in the frame and shifts focus to it.
This makes the video much more expressive. At the same time, you can change focusing after shooting, as well as form the “boke” effect.
The advantage of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max is the ability to shoot ProRes video up to 4K at 30 fps, however, for the 128GB model, the maximum resolution is 1080p…
Pros have more possibilities in working with optical zoom when shooting video – 3x zoom, 2x zoom and 9x optical. The base iPhone 13 can shoot with 2x optical zoom and 3x digital zoom.
The front-facing TrueDepth camera for all representatives of the iPhone 13 line received a resolution of 12 megapixels and an aperture of f / 2.2. But in the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, the camera can shoot ProRes video up to 4K 30fps (1080p and 30fps for the 128GB model). The rest of the functionality is the same: Retina Flash, Smart HDR 4 for photos, Photographic Styles, Portrait mode with bokeh and Depth function, six Portrait Lighting options, Cinema Effect mode for shooting with shallow depth of field, 4K video shooting in including HDR Dolby Vision at up to 60 fps, slow motion 1080p at 120 fps, Cinematic Stabilization, Night Mode, Deep Fusion and Quick Take.
Output: Even in the base model iPhone 13, the shooting capabilities were noticeably improved, including software algorithms. Nevertheless, Apple clearly delineates the models, clearly giving representatives of the devices with the prefix Pro improved opportunities for shooting photos and videos. And this applies not only to macro shooting, zoom, but also to work with new photo / video formats, as well as some additional processing algorithms. As cool as the iPhone 13’s camera may seem, Apple offers more advanced and professional solutions in the iPhone 13 Pro.

Water resistance of iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
Water resistance is not among the advantages of the Pro models over the base iPhone 13. So all three members of the family received the same protection with an IP68 rating according to the IEC 60529 standard. It allows the smartphone to stay in water for half an hour and even at a depth of 6 meters. This protection is believed to be sufficient for most real-world scenarios. And it’s not worth experimenting with such difficult conditions – nevertheless, cases of damage to the iPhone from water are not considered warranty.

Battery and autonomy of the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
Apple has done a good job on the autonomy of all representatives of the iPhone 13 series. Not only has the chip itself become more energy efficient, and the screen of Pro models has learned to consume less due to the ProMotion technology, but also the batteries have increased their capacity. The most capacious battery, which is not surprising, turned out to be in the iPhone 13 Pro Max – at 4352 mAh. The battery in the iPhone 13 has a capacity of 3227 mAh, while the iPhone 13 Pro has a battery of 3095 mAh, which is even less than the base model. However, this paradox is not difficult to explain – the devices have the same body size, but at the same time there is clearly more space inside the iPhone 13 due to a less advanced and more compact camera unit.
However, the manufacturer itself does not rely on the capacity of the batteries, but on the real scenarios of the smartphone. It must be said that this is more important for the consumer than abstract numbers. So, the iPhone 13 can play videos up to 19 hours, while the iPhone 13 Pro is up to 22 hours, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max is up to 28 hours. Surprisingly, the iPhone 13 Pro takes advantage of the more powerful hardware, but with a smaller battery. Most likely, the ProMotion technology helps here. The iPhone 13 will be able to watch video streams up to 15 hours, the iPhone 13 Pro – up to 20 hours, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max – up to 25 hours. But the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro will be able to listen to audio for 75 hours, while its larger counterpart – up to 95 hours.
All three smartphones support fast charging, which can be used to replenish half of the battery capacity in 30 minutes. To do this, you will need to use a 20-watt power supply. The iPhone 13 series also supports wireless charging, both Qi and Apple’s MagSafe.
Output: In the iPhone 13 series, autonomy has improved significantly, including due to the increase in battery capacity. The leader among the models is, undoubtedly, the iPhone 13 Pro Max – the larger size allows you to accommodate a more capacious battery. The iPhone 13 Pro will last a little longer than the iPhone 13, even with a lower battery capacity. Apparently, the ProMotion function helps with this.

Nevertheless, we are considering representatives of the same series, so traditionally there are not so many differences between them. The main thing is cameras and performance, although even the processor in all iPhone 13s is the same. iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max look similar, support all modern network technologies in the same way (LTE, 5G, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5, VoLTE). It can only be noted that the iPhone 13 Pro / iPhone 13 Pro Max has a LiDAR module. It will help when working with augmented reality, while remaining an exclusive “feature” of the Pro series. LiDAR will also show itself when working with portraits in Night mode and accelerate autofocus in low light.

The pricing of the iPhone lineup is straightforward and straightforward. Pro models cost significantly more than the base iPhone 13, with the largest iPhone 13 Pro Max being the most expensive. There are price overlaps, meaning you can buy a larger or more powerful device for the same price, but with less storage. In general, the cheapest iPhone 13 128 GB is exactly 2 times cheaper than the most expensive member of the family, iPhone 13 Pro Max 1 TB.
