Starting with OS X 10.9 Mavericks, Mac owners have the ability to wirelessly display images from a computer directly to a TV screen using the AirDisplay function. However, for this, it was necessary to use exclusively the mirroring mode, which did not allow broadcasting a single video without displaying the entire screen.

Apple removed this limitation in OS X 10.11 El Capitan by adding more complete AirPlay support, allowing you to stream videos from Safari and other apps to your AirPlay-enabled TV or Apple TV.

System requirements for using AirPlay on Mac
You can use AirPlay Mirroring to wirelessly stream content from your Mac screen to an AirPlay-enabled TV or any HDMI-equipped TV with an Apple TV connected to it. This feature requires a Mac with OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 or later:
- iMac (Mid 2011 and later)
- Mac mini (Mid 2011 and later)
- MacBook (Early 2015 and later)
- MacBook Air (Mid 2011 and later)
- MacBook Pro (Early 2011 and later)
- Mac Pro (Late 2013 and later)
AirPlay also supports peer-to-peer networking, allowing your friends to connect their Mac or iOS devices to an Apple TV or compatible TV without having to enter a password or connect to Wi-Fi.
AirPlay requires Mac, TV and Apple TV connectivity to one local network (Wi-Fi)…
You can check for AirPlay support as follows: Apple menu () → “System settings“→”Monitors“.
If option Add Monitor is not displayed, then your Mac does not meet the AirPlay requirements. Here you can immediately select a TV or Apple TV set-top box for mirroring (video replay).
Note: in older versions of macOS, this option was called “AirPlay Monitor”…

Potential AirPlay Problems
For the most part, problems with AirPlay are due to incorrect Wi-Fi or hardware mismatch. If your Mac, compatible TV, or Apple TV is on your local network and running, and the AirPlay icon is still not displayed, this may mean that the hardware on your computer does not meet the AirPlay requirements. Check your Mac hardware meets the AirPlay system requirement. If everything is ok and the icon is still not displayed, then the problem may be in the firewall settings. In order to check the settings, you need to do the following:
1… Open the menu → “System settings“→”Protection and safety“→”Firewall“.
2… Click on the lock icon and enter the administrator login and password.
3… If enabled, select the “Firewall“.
4… Uncheck the box “Block all incoming connections“.
5… Select the option “Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections“.
Sometimes AirPlay can turn off by itself. This means that the Wi-Fi network is overloaded or the connection is interrupted due to a lot of interference.
