The Terminal is a great tool for fine-tuning macOS, but the problem is that not everyone will find the patience and strength to immerse themselves in the world of programming. What if you want to customize macOS to your liking? Specialized utilities will come to the rescue!

1. TinkerTool
TinkerTool will provide access to account settings that you will not see in System Preferences. The utility does not make irreversible changes, does not change the operating system, and does not use background processes. Thanks to this, the operation of the operating system will not be disrupted and there is no risk in all actions performed. This is not some MacKeeper, from which you can get only problems, rather than stable system operation. Most recently, the developers updated TinkerTool to version 7.1, bringing support for macOS Mojave.
The utility is made in the style MacOS System Preferences… Here you can customize such interface elements as Finder, Dock, Desktop or Fonts… Also available is fine tuning of programs, the standard Safari browser, the iTunes media combine or the QuickTime player. So hide system files, change system fonts, disable Dashboard or the effect of inertia when scrolling is not difficult even for a beginner.
Below are some examples of settings from TinkerTool:
- The program adds a button to the Finder Exit Finder…
- Safari will get the ability to go back one page by pressing the Backspace arrow.
- Dividers in the Dock;
- The ability to easily change the path in which macOS saves screenshots (and their format too);
- Single App Mode – hides all background programs when you switch to a new app;
- Changing the number of files displayed on the menu Recent;
- much much more …
If you understand that you have clearly “overdone” with the number of changes in the system – everything can be rolled back! To do this, TinkerTool has a corresponding button – “Reboot to the state before using TinkerTool” in the panel Reboot…
The system utility TinkerTool is absolutely free and supports Russian.

2. Onyx
The utility combines the features of maintenance software and the usual customization of macOS – it helps to find common problems in the operation of the operating system and improves its appearance and functionality. This time we will not touch the “technical” side of the issue, but focus on the “tuning” one.
All the necessary options are in the tab Parameters… They are grouped by topic – General, Finder, Dock, Safari, Login, and more.
Among the possibilities:
- Hiding various interface elements in the Finder menu;
- The ability to put a half-star rating in iTunes – for example, not 5 stars, but 4.5;
- Configure parameters for taking screenshots;
- much much more …
The Onyx app is absolutely free and supports Russian.

3. MacPilot
If you want to customize everything you can in your Mac, MacPilot is the best choice! Here are just a few of its features:
- Adding separators between icons in the Dock;
- Configuring Dock to appear and disappear automatically;
- Disable Notification Center and Mission Control;
- Disable all animations;
- Adding an option Quit Finder in the Finder menu;
- Change of format and path for taking screenshots;
- Safe deletion of files;
- Forced inclusion of a certain display resolution;
- much much more …
And this is just a small part of what MacPilot can do. To be honest, the number of settings in the application seems even excessive – there are so many of them here.
However, you won’t be able to get lost in them – everything is organized more than logically and conveniently. By clicking on the main section, a sidebar panel with the corresponding settings is displayed. It is advisable to first familiarize yourself with all the settings in the section, and only then make a decision on the activation or deactivation of specific options.
The only downside to MacPilot is that you have to pay $ 30 for the final license. However, the program has a 7-day trial, so the user will have more than enough time to decide whether he needs the wealth of MacPilot settings or not.
Download MacPilot (there is a trial period for 7 days, then $ 1.33 / month)

4. Cocktail
Another paid program. It is possible to disable window enlargement, display the full path to any file in the window title, and fix icons and their size in the Dock. You can also customize the items in the Finder menu, turn off various animations, and prevent the Photos app from starting automatically when you connect a device with photos to your Mac.
Buying a Cocktail only makes sense if you want to use the tools for fixing errors in the system (they are also here). If you do not need such functionality, the application can be a rather expensive purchase in terms of price-quality ratio.
Download Cocktail (there is a trial period, then $ 19)
