In the 1980s, the Rubik’s Cube became almost the main intellectual entertainment of the Soviet intelligentsia. This toy itself was invented in 1974 by the Hungarian sculptor and teacher Ernö Rubik. The plastic cube 3 × 3 × 3 received 54 colored stickers. The faces are capable of rotating around three internal axes. The goal of the game is to make each face of squares of the same color.
Very quickly, Rubik’s Cube became a popular and beloved puzzle game. It is believed that almost half a billion of these toys have been sold in total. And puzzle-making is an interesting hobby. Learning how to solve the Rubik’s Cube is not so easy – it takes time, patience and skill.
For those who really want to learn how to solve the Rubik’s Cube, it will not be difficult to find text and video guides on this topic – the Internet is full of information, but it is easy to get confused in its abundance. Personally, I several times undertook to study the techniques for collecting the cube (I even managed to somehow collect one side), but immediately after it came to some formulas with variables like, 2F, R, U, R ‘, D, L ‘, then immediately gave up this occupation.
A few years later, an amazing device fell into my hands – the GoCube, thanks to which my 10-year-old daughter and I learned to collect the Rubik’s Cube. It took us about five hours over five days (one hour a day). Probably, the learning process can be completed much faster.
What is GoCube?
This is also a puzzle cube, but it pairs with the companion app installed on an iPhone, iPad (link) or Android device (link) via Bluetooth. The gadget teaches how to assemble a famous toy, using an individual approach. The app gently guides you through the learning process. GoCube turns the cube building process into a fun interactive game.
Even tactile touches to this toy cause pleasant sensations. The edges of the cube move very smoothly. The toy is very smooth, which allows you to quickly work with it – this is useful for learning. Regular standard Rubik’s Cubes can “stick” a little, which leads to the movement of several layers. This slows down the build and causes errors. This just doesn’t happen when playing with the GoCube.
The overall aesthetic of the die is good too. Its corners are slightly rounded, the squares themselves are made of solid-colored shiny plastic, and the size is slightly smaller than that of other similar cubes.
The gadget is easy to charge. Just line up the charging pad with the pins with the center yellow square. It has four special holes. The other end of the cable must be plugged into a regular USB port. GoCube does not take very long to charge – it will take an hour and a half from the moment of full discharge.
In practice, the toy’s battery life is 4-5 hours. It is quite possible to use the GoCube even in a discharged state, but then it will turn into an ordinary Rubik’s Cube, losing all the charm of using sensors and pairing with the application.
The GoCube has an LED backlight that is used as a reward for successful assignments and also useful in low light conditions.
The backlight can be forced on or off using the GoCube app.
The GoCube developers have also taken great care in creating the packaging, which has a unique interior design with a hidden magnetic pocket. In the box you will find the cube itself, a branded storage bag, a charging stand, a charging cable and a quick start guide.
The stand is a great way to place a toy, smartphone on the table, or you can use it while recharging.
How it works?
Inside the toy are an accelerometer, LEDs and a battery. With Bluetooth version 5, the GoCube can detect its orientation and send this information back to the GoCube app. The program shows a 3D image of your GoCube, which moves in real time along with the physical cube. That is, if you rotate the left side of your GoCube counterclockwise, the 3D cube in the application will have the same change. Again, the program can be installed on both a phone and a tablet based on iOS and Android.
Many beginners stop at collecting one layer on their own, professional gamers call it a “white face.” But then the problems begin, which are scary in the study of the Rubik’s Cube.
The most important section of the GoCube app for a beginner is “Academy”… With its help, the program will methodically guide the user through the entire puzzle assembly process, from start to finish.
In this case, it will not only be shown (diagrams + video) how to assemble a cube, but also training will take place. The app will teach you the algorithms that are used to assemble the puzzle. The application supports Russian.
Usually, beginners, before getting acquainted with the GoCube Academy, have little understanding of the existing assembly algorithms, acting simply on a whim. And you can’t memorize complex instructions. The required movements seem unnatural, it is easy to get confused, which led to the reset of the achieved process. Attempts to learn how to assemble the second layer often end in failure.
The GoCube app will teach you how to assemble the second layer in just a couple of hours. Not only will this stage be subdued to you, but the total time for assembling the first two faces will be reduced to 4-5 minutes. But the third layer is already more difficult to assemble on your own, but with the help of GoCube, the templates and algorithms necessary for this become clear.
You just need to set aside at least one hour a day, work with the application, not being distracted by household chores and news, and try to assemble the cube yourself.
The Algo Book “building” is located on the Academy map, where you can access a section with algorithms that help you quickly solve a cube without having to go through the training process again.
Additional fun features
Academy is far from the only function of the GoCube app. The Games section contains several games that you can play. In them, the cube will be used as a controller.
For example, in the game Cubonator, you need to play a melody by rotating the different layers of the cube in certain directions. This is not only a curious way to play with the cube, but also a surprisingly effective way to capture certain actions in memory when learning algorithms.
The Labyrinth game uses toy sensors to wire the ball through the labyrinth, in Patterns, building a cube will allow you to draw a given pattern, etc.
With every new update to the GoCube app, new features and capabilities are added.
For an experienced player
Up to this point, one might get the impression that GoCube is a tool for beginners. But the creators of the product decided to attract a more advanced audience to it. The GoCube app has some features for those who are already pretty good at solving Rubik’s Cube.
Whether you want to get an idea of your average puzzle solving time or are trying to beat your personal best, GoCube has a built-in timer from start to finish, personal scoreboard (My Cube tab), global leaderboards (Leaderboard tab) and even the ability to converge in a virtual a duel with other GoCube owners (Matches tab).
What else do you need to know?
At times, the application may incorrectly display the current orientation of the toy. But you shouldn’t blame the GoCube itself – after all, Bluetooth connections are not as reliable as we would like.
The dice creators have anticipated this problem by including one-touch calibration mode. It is available on any screen that is currently displaying the orientation of your cube. Just hold the cube green side forward and white side up, tap the button and keep playing.
In addition, it may happen that the squares on the cube displayed in the application do not correspond to reality. This is due to the use of the cube without connecting to the app. Fortunately, this problem can be easily solved in the application. To do this, click on the profile icon in the upper left corner of the application and go to the menu Load die state… Next, you need to color the cube on the screen in accordance with the real placement of the colored sectors and press Load colored cube… If the cube is in a solved state, press Load Solved Cube…
General impressions of the smart GoCube cube
The GoCube itself is a high-quality and stylish toy, and when paired with the application, the product reveals a lot of features that cause truly genuine delight. If you’re interested in solving Rubik’s Cube-style puzzles, there is a really quick and fun way to do it.
The GoCube cube costs about 6,500 rubles. This version of Rubik’s Cube seems quite expensive, but the price is justified by the operation of the application and the presence of sensors. Their combination will allow you to comfortably go through the learning process.
GoCube itself appears to be an interesting physical competitor to video games, forcing both hands to participate and the brain to strain. The toy will be a great gift for both a hard-to-surprise person and a teen looking for challenges. Thanks to GoCube, Rubik’s Cube has become both easier and more interesting.
In addition to GoCube, Particula also offers a more budgetary version of the Rubik’s Cube – Rubik’s Connected, which costs 5,000 rubles.
