A game Prune refers to those rare gem applications that appear from time to time, as if to emphasize how much the App Store is full of clumsy clones of previous hits. Too many developers eager for profit, too often the cunning financial model is at the forefront. And very rarely there are projects that make you remember that once the sensory control system served as a powerful incentive for creative research by game designers, artists and musicians.
If we ignore sentimentality, then Prune – The result of the painstaking work of Joel McDonald (Joel McDonald), who in a year turned his experimental scripted plant growth simulator into a full-fledged game. In this he was helped by designer and sound specialist Kyle Preston (Kyle Preston). His efforts the game acquired a minimalistic, but deeply thought-out graphic component and a meditative musical background.

A distinctive feature of the gameplay – measured, the absence of a tortured drive, fines for mistakes and an endless pursuit of points. Instead of working out a winning strategy, the game encourages mini-experiments, but if you are at a dead end, you can simply skip the next step.
The goal of the game is to care for a tiny sprouted tree, cutting off excess branches and allowing the plant to reach for the light in order to grow beautiful large flowers.
As a result, like scenes from Japanese epics, they will fly around with snow-white rain of petals, but before that the player will have to solve a lot of problems in real time. The original lawn may turn out to be a pit littered with rockfall, branches under the weight of their own weight will tend to land, away from sunlight, and dangerous red spheres will bring toxins. In the later stages, the list of tasks is replenished with concerns about pollination and giving the trunk a certain, reference curved shape.
According to the author of the project, Joel MacDonald, Prune will be the very dish that can dilute the boring diet of iOS gamers in order.
“Do not get me wrong, I really like shooters and dynamic games – yes, I just grew up on Quake. But after seven years of work on large-scale projects in large studios, I really want to create something radically different. ”
And the characteristic, laid-back gameplay Prune a striking example of this – the game at the same time calms and carries away.
For a year and a half, in the amount spent on this project, MacDonald went through about a dozen concepts, step by step rejecting most of the common schemes. For example, such as the option with direct rivalry between two growing bonsai under the control of a pair of players or a person and a computer. He also refused endless gameplay – if the goal is final and clearly defined, it is much easier to implement the next level, and then pass it. In a way, the game designer first made the path that the player is invited to follow, being able to cut off all that is redundant and leaving only what it really is worth focusing on with your heart and mind, starting to grow your tree.
The game does not have a mechanism for in-app purchases and a rating system, but you can put your achievements on public display.
