Presentations of new iPhones always cause serious public interest. After all, the company’s flagships noticeably affect the entire market, setting trends for the next year. It’s no coincidence that iPhones are not shy about copying and imitating it. Apple has already accustomed everyone to a three-year cycle of updating the design of their smartphones. With the release of the iPhone 12 Pro series, a new era has begun. And the previous flagship seems to be becoming a part of history.
Nevertheless, the iPhone 11 Pro could not become very outdated in a year and is still available for sale (from official resellers). In this article, we will draw a comparison between the current flagship iPhone 12 Pro and last year’s – iPhone 11 Pro and see how much the new “firmware” was better than its predecessor.

IPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro design and dimensions
The dimensions of the iPhone 12 Pro have increased (but only slightly) relative to its predecessor. Now the smartphone measures 146.7 × 71.5 × 7.4 mm and weighs 187 g. In turn, the iPhone 11 Pro was slightly smaller, but thicker – 144 × 71.4 × 8.1 mm and weighed 188 g. this is due to the increase in screen diagonal – 6.1 inches for the iPhone 12 Pro and 5.8 inches for the iPhone 11 Pro. The smallest changes to the dimensions of the 2020 flagship are due to the reduction of the bezels around the screen.
The novelty received a new design with sharp edges and pronounced ends, repeating the style used in the iPhone 4 and the new iPad.
iPhone 12 Pro
The iPhone 11 Pro has a design characteristic of the entire model cycle since the days of the iPhone X – with rounded edges. On the back of both smartphones there is a module, characteristic of the Pro line, with three cameras and a flash.
iPhone 11 Pro
The front panel of iPhone 12 Pro has received additional protection Ceramic Shield, thanks to which the risk of damage to the display is reduced by 4 times. The back panel remains glass, the material of the frames also remains the same – surgical stainless steel.
iPhone 12 Pro
The iPhone 11 Pro has both tempered glass panels.
Both models received four color options. And if silver and gold repeat each other, then space gray and dark green in the iPhone 11 Pro have been replaced by graphite and Pacific blue, respectively.

Output: If the dimensions of both models practically do not differ, then the change in design is much more important. And a new color can also become a determining factor for someone when choosing.

IPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro display
If the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro were different sizes, then this year that has changed. The iPhone 12 Pro received a 6.1-inch screen, just like the iPhone 12. Compared to last year’s firmware, there was an increase in the display – the iPhone 11 Pro was equipped with a 5.8-inch display. But it’s not just about size. The matrix remains the same – it is Super Retina XDR, but the resolution has increased slightly. If in the iPhone 11 Pro it was 2436 × 1125 pixels, which was a density of 458 dpi, then the iPhone 12 Pro received a screen with a resolution of 2532 × 1170 pixels with a density of 460 dpi. The increase in resolution can be associated with an increase in the diagonal of the display itself.
iPhone 12 Pro
Other screen specs for iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro remain the same: 2,000,000: 1 contrast ratio, HDR support, True Tone technology, P3 wide color gamut, 800 cd / m2 standard brightness2 and up to 1200 cd / m22 in HDR mode. The novelty has not received an improvement in the screen refresh rate to 90 or 120 Hz.
Output: The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro have great screens. The new item has a slightly larger display, due to this, the diagonal has also grown. There is no difference in quality, it’s all about size. But given the similar dimensions of the case, the advantage is clearly in the iPhone 12 Pro with its thin frames around the enlarged screen.

Processor and performance of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro
iPhone 12 Pro is based on the new A14 Bionic processor, which is Apple’s fastest processor to date. It has a new, fourth generation system Neural Engine. The A14 Bionic is made with 5nm technology, which promises to increase its energy efficiency.
Last year’s iPhone 11 Pro is powered by a 7nm A13 Bionic. The processor itself is about 20% slower than the new product, the neural processor has 2 times fewer cores, which makes it 80% slower, and machine learning is 70% weaker.
The new type of RAM in the iPhone 12 Pro is worth noting. This is LPDDR5, whereas the predecessor had LPDDR4X. Its volume has also increased – the new flagship received 6 GB, whereas last year the iPhone 11 Pro had only 4 GB of RAM. The available options for the built-in storage differ slightly. The iPhone 12 Pro has a minimum of 128GB of storage, with 256GB and 512GB options. But the iPhone 11 Pro has a base 64 GB, while the other options are the same as the older model – 256 and 512 GB.
Output: Despite the apparent superiority in numbers of the iPhone 12 Pro over last year’s brother, in practice, this will hardly be noticeable. A slight difference can be seen in complex scenarios when processing video. The A13 Bionic is still out of reach for most competitors, the iPhone 11 Pro is fast enough without any lag or lag. But for the future, of course, the backlog of the new iPhone 12 Pro seems to be the best, including the base storage capacity.

IPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro cameras
Both smartphones received a module with three cameras with a resolution of 12 MP each: wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto. Their parameters are also similar. The super-width got an aperture of f / 2.4, a telephoto – an aperture of f / 2.0, differences in a wide-angle camera. The iPhone 12 Pro has an f / 1.6 aperture, while the iPhone 11 Pro has f / 1.8. Both smartphones are presented to us as professional, so they support the most famous chips of their generation: Night mode, Deep Fusion. Nevertheless, the iPhone 12 Pro was taught to shoot in Night mode with both wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle cameras, as well as portraits, in addition, the smartphone received support for Smart HDR 3 and the Apple ProRAW format.
An example of shooting with an ultra wide-angle camera in night mode on the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro:
Smartphones have the same zoom capabilities – 4x optical (2x for zooming in and 2x for zooming out) and 10x digital.
The possibilities of shooting video are preserved. This is, as before, 4K at 24, 30 or 60 frames per second or 1080p HD video at 30 or 60 frames per second. Slow-motion video capabilities are the same for both smartphones – 1080p at 120 or 240 frames per second. But at the same time, the iPhone 12 Pro received new features – shooting HDR video in the Dolby Vision standard at up to 60 frames per second and Time Lapse in Night mode. The rest of the features remained unchanged: audio zoom, optical stabilization, Quick Take, optical and digital zoom.
Additionally, the iPhone 12 Pro introduces a LiDAR laser rangefinder to improve autofocus performance in low light conditions.

An example of a portrait shot on iPhone 12 Pro in Night Mode:
The front-facing TrueDepth camera also received a few changes – there was support for Smart HDR 3 for photos and HDR for video in the Dolby Vision standard, as well as the ability to shoot selfies in Night mode.
The front camera retains its 12MP resolution and f / 2.2 aperture, just like the iPhone 11 Pro.
You can find a detailed review of the iPhone 12 Pro cameras on this page.
Output: The cameras on the iPhone 11 Pro were already considered great. The new flagship shoots better in the dark. The main wide-angle module received the most changes, while the rest will be able to take better pictures due to the work of new software algorithms. But a more powerful processor will help the iPhone 12 Pro handle photos and videos better, with new HDR modes. And the emergence of a new format will undoubtedly delight professionals.

Battery and autonomy iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro
Battery life is surprisingly better on the iPhone 11 Pro than on the iPhone 12 Pro. The claimed 18 hours of viewing video for the flagship of 2019 versus 17 hours for the new product can in fact be considered an additional 10-15% battery life in normal scenarios.
The flagship of 2020 received a battery with a reduced capacity in comparison with the iPhone 11 Pro – 2 815 mAh versus 3 046 mAh, respectively.
The advantage of the iPhone 12 Pro over last year’s flagship is the ability to work with MagSafe fast wireless magnetic charging (sold separately), which allows you to charge your smartphone with up to 15W.
