Apple smartphones are very stable and rarely need to restore firmware. However, sometimes it becomes necessary to return the iPhone to its factory form in order to get rid of glitches after an unsuccessful software update or system failure.
DFU mode is useful for this.
📍 Thank you re: Store for the helpful information. 👌
DFU mode (Device Firmware Update) is a low-level mode for updating iPhone firmware. When you turn it on, the smartphone will be recognized by the computer to restore iOS. The iPhone itself will not load the graphical shell of the system and respond to button presses.
Very often, DFU mode is confused with Recovery mode. Outwardly, they are easy to distinguish, in DFU mode there are no signs on the iPhone screen, and in recovery mode you will see a indicator of connection to the computer.
Recovery Mode is an iOS recovery mode programmatically. The data remains in place, and system files are restored from the original firmware or backup.
DFU mode is iOS recovery in bootloader mode, in which all files are erased and overwritten by data from the original firmware.
Conditionally, Recovery Mode can be compared to loading Time Machine backup, and DFU mode with a complete reinstallation of the operating system.
How to enter DFU mode on iPhone with a physical Home button
All older Apple smartphones up to and including the iPhone 6s and iPhone SE have a physical Home button. They enter the DFU as follows:
1. Connect the smartphone to the computer using the cable.
2. Turn off the iPhone.
3. When the screen goes blank, hold down the power button for 3 seconds.
4. Hold the Home button, while continuing to hold down the power button.
5. After 10 seconds, release the power button and continue to hold the Home button for another 5 seconds.
The black screen of the smartphone will indicate entry to DFU. An apple on the screen signals the start of iOS download, you will have to repeat the procedure again.
To exit DFU mode, hold down the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds.
How to enter DFU mode on iPhone with the Home touch button
In smartphones with moisture protection, the Cupertinos abandoned the physical button on the front of the smartphone. It was replaced by a touch key. The procedure for switching to DFU mode has become slightly different:
1. Connect the smartphone to the computer using the cable.
2. Turn off the iPhone.
3. When the screen goes blank, hold down the power button for 3 seconds.
4. Hold down the volume down button, while continuing to hold down the power button.
5. After 10 seconds, release the power button and continue to hold the volume down button for another 5 seconds.
The black screen of the smartphone will indicate entry to DFU. An apple on the screen signals the start of iOS download, you will have to repeat the procedure again.
To exit the DFU mode, you need to hold down the volume down and Power buttons for 10 seconds.
As you can see, the process of entering and exiting this mode differs only in the use of the volume key instead of the Home button.

How to enter DFU mode on iPhone with Face ID
With the release of the iPhone X, Apple completely abandoned the button on the front side of the smartphone, and the transition to DFU mode was a bit more complicated:
1. Connect the smartphone to the computer using the cable.
2. Alternately press the volume up button, then the volume down button and hold down the power button.
3. Once the smartphone screen goes blank, hold down the volume down button and continue to hold the power button for 5 seconds.
4. Release the power button and continue to hold the volume down button for another 15 seconds.
If you see the Apple logo, it means that iOS downloads started and you did something wrong. Will have to try again.
To exit the mode, you need to alternately press the volume up button, the volume down button and hold down the power button. You can release the button after the apple appears on the screen.
