Apple unexpectedly unveiled the new iPad Pro. The company did not have time to update the line of professional tablets in 2019. Most likely, I brought to mind the work of the new sensor, which received the name LiDAR.
In this article, we compare the new line with 11 and 12.9-inch models to the one that is instantly outdated. The latter was released at the end of 2018 and has been actively sold until today.
Display
Apple sets in the new iPad Pro models exactly the same screens that it used the year before last. She calls them Liquid Retina and ensures that no other mobile device on the market is so advanced.
The assortment, as before, has two options: a compact 11-inch model with a resolution of 2388 × 1668 and 12.9-inch for maximalists with a resolution of 2732 × 2048 pixels. In addition to screen sizes and dimensions of the case, there are traditionally no other differences in them. Even the density is the same, 264 pixels per inch.
The oleophobic layer, which prevents the excessive appearance of fingerprints, and lamination are still here. There is anti-reflective coating, which is intended for outdoor use. Nevertheless, it is difficult to say that for a comfortable work in direct sunlight there is enough brightness of 600 cd / m².
Of course, there is support for True Tone technology, which is better off when working on visual content. In place is ProMotion, which increases the screen refresh rate to 120 Hz. It would be nice if this feature appeared in the iPhone 12.
It’s good that the frames around the screen in the new iPad Pro have not done less. Then I would have to make a cutout for the TrueDepth front-facing camera module, which is useless here.
Design and dimensions
Externally, the iPad Pro 2020 is practically no different from professional Apple tablets released in 2018. The only exception is the main camera module, which received a couple of special stages. About them later.
The dimensions of the new tablets, in comparison with the old ones, have not changed. That is why many accessories that are already on the market for the iPad Pro 2020 will definitely work. For example, envelope covers from any material will definitely fit.
In terms of weight, the new iPad Pros are slightly heavier: from 3 to 10 grams, depending on the model. Nevertheless, this change is unlikely to be felt in real use. Here are the dimensions and weight of all 2020 and 2018 models.
2018 Models:
▪︎ 11-inch iPad Pro without a cellular module: 247.6 × 178.5 × 5.9 mm, 468 g
▪︎ 11-inch iPad Pro with honeycomb module: 247.6 × 178.5 × 5.9 mm, 468 g

▪︎ 12.9-inch iPad Pro with honeycomb module: 280.6 × 214.9 × 5.9 mm, 633 g
2020 models:

▪︎ 11-inch iPad Pro with honeycomb module: 247.6 × 178.5 × 5.9 mm, 473 g
▪︎ 12.9-inch iPad Pro without a cellular module: 280.6 × 214.9 × 5.9 mm, 641 g
▪︎ 12.9-inch iPad Pro with honeycomb module: 280.6 × 214.9 × 5.9 mm, 643 g
Performance
Before the official announcement of the iPad Pro 2020, we were 100% sure that it would receive an Apple A13x processor. In recent years, the company usually showed new tablets exactly after fresh smartphones, and their chips received the coveted index x, which spoke of an increase in performance.
However, something went wrong this year. The Apple A12x, which was used in the 2018 iPad Pro, was replaced by the Apple A12z. What else z ?! There was nothing like that in my memory. Moreover, the manufacturer himself does not explain what’s what.
The question remains, which is faster: Apple A13 from iPhone 11 or Apple A12z from iPad Pro 2020. Most likely, the latter loses to the first in speed, but wins in additional features.
As before, Apple claims that Apple A12z will give odds to many processors of modern laptops. Actually, today the company is positioning the iPad Pro as an alternative to a laptop, which is especially well suited for creative tasks.
Special attention deserves the 8-core graphics processor, which is sharpened for working with three-dimensional graphics. If you succeed in squeezing all the juices out of it, it is only with the help of augmented reality, on which Apple continues to bet.
Cameras
The main camera remained unchanged. This is a 12 megapixel wide-angle module with an aperture size of ƒ / 1.8. With it, you can take quite good pictures yourself. In terms of quality, this is all about the level of the iPhone XS.
However, in addition to the standard wide-angle, the iPad Pro 2020 also has an additional ultra-wide-angle camera. It is 10 megapixels and with an aperture size of ƒ / 2.4.
Until the device fell into our hands, it is difficult to say how high-quality this module will be. This is a new camera about which there is no information yet. The iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro use a 12-megapixel module with the same aperture size. He photographs so-so, especially in the evening.
From a distance, it seems that the new iPad Pro line is not a dual camera, but a triple camera. However, the third module is a brand new sensor called LiDAR. It is designed to measure the distance to the object with an accuracy of nanometer.
Apparently, this sensor will be actively used in augmented reality, for which Apple still has big plans. It will increase the accuracy of positioning virtual objects in real space. Most likely, the same will be with the iPhone 12.
Accessories
Like the old iPad Pro 2018, the new products work with the 2nd generation Apple Pencil. This is the actual stylus of the company, which is magnetized to the side of the tablet. A convenient thing, which is intended not only for artists, but also for all other users.
However, the new keyboard that connects to the iPad Pro with magnets and the Smart Connector interface on the back of the tablet is much more interesting. It is called Magic Keyboard and is equipped with a real trackpad.
The trackpad is needed to control the cursor, which becomes a full-fledged iPadOS control. It will appear on the screen as needed and disappear when there is no need for it.
What’s more interesting, the Magic Typeboard has a built-in USB Type-C port, which is useful for charging the tablet and connecting additional accessories to it. And a new keyboard can hold the mobile gadget on weight.
Judging by the data on the official Apple website, the old iPad Pro will not work with the new Magic Keyboard with a trackpad. Only Smart Keyboard Folio will remain available to them.
conclusions
In general, the new iPad Pro 2020 has two main innovations: an additional camera with a sensor for measuring the distance to objects, as well as a keyboard with a trackpad. Whether they are worthy of attention or not, it’s up to you.
Updating the 2018 iPad Pro with a new one doesn’t seem to make much sense. But if you are thinking about buying such a gadget, you need to take just the latest model.
Prices rose slightly. A basic 11-inch iPad Pro can be bought for 69,990 pyb. instead of 66,990 pyb., for which you can still find the old one. But the 12.9-inch model will cost 86,990 rubles. against 82 990 rub. for the year before last.
