During the announcement of the AirPods Pro, costing 18,000 rubles, Apple emphasized the presence of the IPX4 waterproof class. However, don’t rush to dive and swim with these wireless earbuds.

It’s important to note that the first and second generation AirPods didn’t have water resistance at all. While some runners and other athletes have almost certainly used the headphones in the rain or in high humidity conditions, Apple makes no direct guarantee that devices will work in such conditions. But for the newer Apple Watch and iPhone models, AirPods users are left alone with their problem if liquid gets inside their wireless headphones.

Can I swim with AirPods Pro?
AirPods Pro are the first AirPods to be water resistant. It is no coincidence that Apple emphasized their compliance with the IPX4 class. But what does it mean?
The IP classes are a rating system published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Experts determine the degree of protection of the body of an electrical device from the penetration of everything: from solid objects (including body parts) to dust and water. The class is intended to provide companies and consumers with a clear idea of what companies mean when they use the term “water resistance”.
In our case, IPX4 means the AirPods Pro are splash-resistant. According to IEC:
Splashes falling on the hull from any direction should not have any harmful effect using: a) an oscillating device; b) spray nozzle.
Test a) is carried out for 10 minutes; b) is carried out without a protective screen for at least 5 minutes.
In other words, you can’t swim with AirPods Pro… But if you get caught in the rain or even a heavy downpour, or under the spray from a car passing by in a puddle, nothing will happen to the headphones. Is that enough for you, or do you need more water protection than the IPX4 rating suggests?
