Great day today.
In 2010, I was one of those who considered the iPad only an “enlarged iPod Touch” and dismissed the announcement. At that time, it seemed logical. Touch iPod was then a very hot little thing in the people – the most affordable ticket to the world of Apple and at the same time one of the most powerful gadgets that could be bought for that kind of money. Almost like an iPhone, only without a cellular module.
10 years later in the market no tabletable to stand up on an equal footing with the iPad. Catching up is considered on the fingers of one hand. All other “killers” were dissolved in scandals, failures and oblivion.
Apple actually created the category, promoted it, updated it year after year and turned it into a device that has no analogues. And his prospects are still ahead.
I have a first-generation iPad, purchased in the first half of 2010. And the iPad Pro 2018, which I love. In honor of today’s date, I decided to compare both – and remind you of how the breakthrough Apple gadget began.
Compostal together? Moreover, this is not a standard review, but rather an applied retrospective.
Design and housing. First started, last back
The rounded, thick and solid edges of the first iPad migrated to it straight from the Unibody-enclosures of the MacBook Pro. The all-aluminum, silver, one-piece back panel looked advantageous against the background of boring black plastic, which heaped up the shelves of shops of those times. Nothing could be confused with the ipad.
The tablet instantly attracted eyes, it was only necessary to get it out of the bag: in 2010, the world did not see such devices outside of futuristic films and concepts. Actually, it was the effect of the first iPhone. I just heard questions. Wow, is that IPAd? Well, how is it, like it? Show me what it does. Can I hold it? …
Wow effect fixed huge glass display at a time when transparent plastic was considered the norm. In the hands of the device seemed heavy even by the standards of 2010 (680 grams or 730 grams with the 3G module), but not so much that the hands fell off after an hour of surfing, watching a video or reading a book.
The design of the iPad became decisive for the entire category of devices in the future, and to this day all other tablets follow it by inertia. It turned out to be difficult to do better what was almost perfect from the very beginning. The cases were shrinking, the frames were “losing weight”, the weight was “blown away” – but the iPad was as it was and remained unique.
How are you today: the case has stood the test of time. Critically bending the first iPad is almost impossible. And to break the display is not easy with such a high glass thickness. It’s easy to damage little things.
For example, my erased back panel from years of contact with something metallic in the cabinet, and the display is covered with a web of scratches of different depths.
It is striking how confidently the tablet accepts blows in the frame and the body as a whole. Dents, dots, and even craters do not interfere with the “tank” impressively working after 10 years. The Home key, volume rocker, silent mode switch and lock button work as clearly as they did in 2010.
If you have this rare device in working condition, try not to break it in 2020, and even more so later. Almost no spare parts for repairs.
Compare with iPad Pro 2018
1st generation iPad thickness: 1.3 centimeters. Weight from 680 grams.
2018 iPad Pro Thickness: 0.6 centimeters. Weight 468 gram.
10 years of progress allowed halve the thickness of the iPad while increasing productivity by almost a hundred times. At the same time, both tablets look more or less similar.
From convex Apple’s back panel subsequently switched to a fully flatthat I personally like a lot more. Since 2010, aluminum has never left the back panel of all iPads, preserving the identity of the device against the backdrop of lurid competitors.
Otherwise, both tablets look surprisingly similarand it’s for the best. I always liked the design of the first generation, and the continuity of the most advanced iPad in history is definitely a plus.
The only thing the iPad Pro 2018 is worse than the very first is durability. There is so much iron and so little space for metal in the modern “monster” that some people manage to bend the tablet in a backpack and even at home imperceptibly. Mine has not yet been hurt, but to the monolithic progenitor of the “proshka” as to the moon on foot.
Display. Then it was worthy, but now it’s magical
When the iPad came out in 2010, finding a display of this level was not easy. Color reproduction was very commendable, viewing angles were unusually impressive (iPhone 4 appeared later), and the resolution of 1024 × 768 was normal.
It was one of the few gadgets with an IPS screen, and next to smartphones of those times (and laptops too), it looked very advantageous, especially from an angle.
Not the highest resolution at that time was a little annoying. Apple tried to make fonts and small details look as clear as possible and did not strain their eyes.
Some wrote down the thickness of the frames in minus, but objectively at that time there was nothing to blame the tablet for. Given the heavy weight, such a framework was very helpful. The tablet had to be held much stronger and more confident in hands than, say, the pretty better iPad Pro 2018.
How are you today: differently. If you have been actively using the first iPad for at least a third of the past 10 years, its display has begun to slowly “leak”. There were highlights and spots that indicate the consumption of the display resource. Nothing lasts forever.
It is difficult to replace the completely damaged screen of this iPad not only because of the design features (there is a lot of glue inside), but also because of the lack of spare parts themselves. So if your model is OK, take care of the display.
Compare with iPad Pro 2018
Both at maximum brightness.
Just look at this photo, and everything is clear without words.
Time lets you know when you put alongside the simply incredible iPad Pro 2018 with its juicy, bright, laminated Super Retina screen (resolution above 2K). Absolutely all display parameters, from viewing angles to contrast, in the new “firmware” delight even in comparison with other gadgets of recent years.
Frames have become more than 2 times thinner, and the screen itself is more than an inch. The hull also decreased.
And you still say that progress stands still. Yes, these two displays are from different universes. And the fact that the first iPad, many were delighted when it came out.
Iron. Apple begins full leadership with iPad
Launching the iPad in 2010, Apple supplied it with a single-core A4 processor – the most powerful ARM processor in 2010, which after six months migrated to iPhone 4 with minor changes.
A4 power exceeded the processor iPhone 3Gs from one and a half to two times, and the performance of the graphics subsystem has grown more than 2 timesto ensure efficient operation of the system while doubling the screen resolution.
The weak point of the tablet was RAM: 256 megabytes moderately pulled iOS 3, but already on iOS 4 it turned into an Achilles heel.
But at first the iPad very vigorously launched all the games from the App Store andalready caught re-releases of GTA 3 and Vice Cityas well as the Minecraft release for iOS. The overall performance of the device was no less pleasing, until you tried to open many tabs in Safari or too actively use the new-fangled multitasking that appeared in iOS 4.
Yes, this is Plague Inc. and it works!
How are you today: given such a huge period – worthy. Many 1st-generation iPads, including those bought at the start of sales, still work. Performance has been hit hard since the release of iOS 5.1.1, and many applications, even those times, do not shine with responsiveness. Departures happen first due to lack of RAM.
You can use most of the functions of the system without critical problems, including local playback of music and movies through built-in applications.
It is amazing how ten-year-old iron turned out to be tenacious. The tablet owes this result, including its thick, legendary sturdy case: It is simply statistically predisposed to survive the hardships of many years of use.
By the way, the 2010 iPad supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks. Many modern Android smartphones are cheaper than 30 thousand rubles so they still do not know how.
Compare with iPad Pro 2018
There will be no revelations here. The A12X Bionic octa-core processor in the iPad Pro 2018 is comparable to modern MacBook Pros and to this day is bypassed all Android smartphones and tablets. And its 6 GB of RAM is almost endless against the background of 256 megabytes of the first iPad.
It was not easy to find a universal benchmark that can measure the performance of two devices with an interval of 10 years. Apple has long been unable to publish 32-bit applications to the architecture of old processors in the App Store. Therefore, many tester applications of those times are completely removed from the store (including the first Geekbench)
Given the huge changes in the standards of the “web” for 10 years, the test results can not be called an accurate comparison of the power of tablets. But they show well how far technology and hardware have gone in devices.
1 1st generation iPad: 2958.6 milliseconds
2018 iPad Pro 2018: 112.9 milliseconds
According to this test, 2018 iPad Pro surpasses first iPad 26 times.
Then we managed to find a free test compatible with the first-generation iPad – PerfomanceTest Mobile. It has been updated little in recent years and is unpopular, so its results should also be considered only in the context of curiosity.
▸ iPad 1 generation scored 440 points. The processor was given 4668 points, 3217 points in memory, 112 points in RAM, 266 points in 2D, and 621 points in 3D.
▸ 2018 iPad Pro scored 7300 points. The processor was given 746356 points, memory 244948 points, RAM 31213331 points (it seems like an error), rendering 2D 15895 points, and 3D – 1187 points (similar to an error).
In this test, the iPad Pro 2018 surpassed the 1st generation iPad processor 159.9 times, memory 76 times, RAM 278 690 times (MDA), 2D rendering 70 times. The 3D results are clearly wrong, because the iPad Pro 2018 in games shows results that bypass dozens of times the theoretical performance of the first iPad.
A huge jerk was made in 10 years. Apple began to lead in the category of mobile processors with A4, and a further focus on creating its own chip architecture made it possible to create the iPad Pro 2018 – thinner, lighter and more powerful than many modern laptops.
Battery. 10 years 10 hours of work
I remember how much this feature of the first iPad captured the people. Many did not believe at all. 10 hours of battery life in those days seemed an unrealistic figure for a mobile device with such a large screen.
Apple has set the highest bar for battery life, to which not only tablets of those times – even computers could not jump. With continuous video playback, the first iPad managed to work more than 12 hours4 times more laptops or portable DVD players. Under load – 9 hours.
Since then, every iPad, including mini and Air, has adapted to this gold standard. Competitors tried to catch up with him for several years, and then completely died out with the total failure of non-iOS tablet computers. Meanwhile, the 2019 10.5-inch iPad works 13-14 hours without difficulty.
The legendary long battery life helped the iPad find many niches for use: flights, trips, work in the field. A thin device with a large screen that you can rely on – 3 years before the announcement of the iPad, this seemed impossible.
The battery is almost 10 years old.
How are you today: even taking into account the natural degradation of cells, the 1st generation iPad manages to keep from 5 to 8 and a half hours of battery life. The duration depends on the operating conditions of the tablet. Many users put the first iPad in a box after the release of iPad 2 or a little later, sometimes remembering and recharging.
Therefore, in 2020, many of the devices came in with a very tenacious battery. Definitely more alive than most Android tablets. I have a couple of such “buckets”, one does not turn on without a cable, the second holds 40 minutes. Both are less than four years old.
I can advise owners of the 1st generation iPad only: make sure that the battery does not swell. No matter how capacious it is, physics and chemistry are inexorable. We noticed that the display or the case is a little swollen – dispose of it, do not wait for the exhaustion of the resource to end with cotton and smoke.
Compare with iPad Pro 2018
Data taken from CoconutBattery.
2010 iPad Battery 6600 mAh. With half the thickness of the case, iPad Pro 2018 fits more battery: 7812 mAh, and in my for some reason whole 8132 mAh. Progress is evident.
iPad Pro 2018 can work the very “golden” 10 hours, for him this is not a problem. But the device is indecently powerful, with a thin body and a high-resolution display. So, its power consumption significantly outshines that of a tablet 10 years ago.
When testing the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement, I discovered a specific life hack. If the brightness of the screen is set equal to or higher than 60%, then the operating time drops by a third. It’s worth lowering the brightness slider to at least 40%, and battery life is growing before our eyes. Apparently, the display backlight in this model is very energy-consuming.
With moderate workload and low brightness, the 11-inch iPad Pro lives with me for the same 9-10 hours, and when reading books at low brightness it easily lasts 11 hours. In games or CPU-heavy tasks 5-8 hours.
So Apple fulfills its unspoken promise to this day. And comparing tablets directly is not entirely correct: the range of capabilities and functionality of the first iPad is miserable against the background of the iPad Pro. It’s like complaining about the fuel consumption of a sports car and contrasting it with a lawn mower. No offense, just face reality.
iOS 5 on the first iPad is even ashamed to compare with iPadOS
The multitasking panel in the first-generation iPad with iOS 5.1.1 installed.
The 1st generation iPad came preloaded with iOS 3.2. In that version of the OS there was no multitasking, which cast a shadow on the functionality of the device. In November 2010, the tablet was updated immediately on iOS 4.2.1, and it literally played with new colors. Like the brakes, alas.
By the release of iOS 5, using the iPad was very difficult, and Apple stopped supporting the device after iOS 5.1.1. The tablet was critically lacking not so much processor power as random access memory.
Ipad was just out of luck: he came out at the time of rapid growth in requirements for hardware and the beginning of a significant expansion of iOS capabilities. In 2011, many complained about performance and were in a hurry to move to iPad 2. I myself watched while the App Store was thinking hard and Safari crashing down when opening several tabs.
Software support eventually ended just 2 years after the start of sales (the subsequent iPad 2 was supported for 6 years!). Today, we are accustomed to miracles like the iPhone SE, it seems nonsense.
How are you today: expectedly Not really. App Store apps have been released for many years without iOS 5.1.1 support, so you won’t put anything new on the tablet. Many older versions of games and programs released before 2013 are successfully installed, but they do not work either because of disabling support for old OS on the server side, or because of the critical incompatibility of web standards and iOS 5 technologies.
The meaning in the application Kiosk long gone iBooks no longer syncs your iCloud library. Notes from new Apple devices not supported on iOS 5.1.1. application iTunes still functional as music player.
The built-in stand alone mail client: It not only works successfully, but also allows you to confidently read and respond to letters. If the iPad supported Apple Music, the tablet would have a real use case in 2020. But alas: even the web player does not start, so you can’t listen to the tracks from the service.
Due to the very meager available functionality of the first iPad, I see no reason to compare iOS 4 and iPadOS of the 2019 model. The first is only logical to remember (a “skeuomorphic” interface!), Brush away a mean tear of nostalgia and put it back together with the tablet. The second one instantly solves 90% of the work tasks of most people on Earth and even replaces the “desktop” OS with many.
And you know, after half an hour of such nostalgia, I wanted to go back to the iPad Pro with its calm interface. Nothing lasts forever, and “skeuomorphism” in 2020 really no place.
10 years have passed, and the iPad is the liveliest. Maybe the PC will survive
Instead of the ending, I’ll mention Steve Jobs’s hackneyed phrase about the post-PC era, adding a little literary translation to it without changing the context. It is often used in an abridged version, and in vain.
When we were an agrarian nation, all cars were by trucks. But when people began to get drawn to the city centers, they began to change to cars.
I think that PCs will be like those same trucks. Fewer people will need them than before. And this will seem alarming for some, because computers have allowed us to achieve a lot. They were incredibly helpful.
But everything is changing. Interests too. It seems to me that we have already begun to move in this direction. Will the iPad be that direction? Who knows? Will this happen next year or in five years? …
We are discussing the post-PC era, but when it really begins to advance, it will not be very comfortable …
So even Jobs did not know whether the era of post-PC came along with the release of the iPad, or whether he would need many more years (second). But he understood the direction absolutely correctly.
Only after many years, the iPad crossed the line of the entertainment device. This happened relatively recently, with the release of iPadOS and iPad Pro 2018. I believe that the possibilities of the latter have not yet been disclosed.
So the golden years of the iPad are yet to come. We are waiting for what Apple will surprise in 2020 and say the very first “thank you”. Not everyone liked him, but really changed everything.
