You can often hear how diesel fuel is contemptuously called diesel fuel. In the minds of many motorists, these concepts are generally synonymous. But this name of diesel fuel is not entirely correct. We will explain why this is the case.

Diesel is usually called the type of fuel obtained from petroleum fractions using direct distillation. But it contains both diesel fractions and kerosene and gas oil. The hydrocarbon mixture is purified and diluted with additives. And the word “diesel fuel” itself has a German origin. In this language, Solaröl literally means “sun oil”. The term itself appeared back in 1857 and referred to the heavy fraction that appears during the distillation of oil. This liquid was oily and yellow in color, which helped the name appear. And in the Soviet Union, in accordance with GOST 1666-42 and GOST 1666-51, even “diesel oil” was produced.
Over time, the word gradually took root in the lexicon of motorists, and in fact diesel fuel is a separate type of fuel that not used in automobile engines at all… Classic diesel fuel is used only in low-speed diesel engines with low revs, such devices can be found on ships, tractors and diesel locomotives. Diesel fuel differs from diesel fuel in its characteristics. It contains much more hydrocarbons, it is less viscous (2-4 mm2 / s) versus (5-9 mm2 / s for diesel fuel) and has a lower boiling point.
The main differences between diesel fuel and diesel are high viscosity and boiling point, but the presence of sulfur in this type of fuel is fundamentally important for the operation of motors with mechanical plunger pumps. And sulfur is contraindicated for automotive engines with electronic injection. These features are clearly spelled out in the GOST describing the requirements for diesel fuel.
The Cummins diesel internal combustion engine first appeared in the American Auburn sedan. But when creating mass production, the Germans were more agile. So, in 1936, the Mercedes-Benz 260 D with a 2.0-liter engine began to be sold. It had 45 horsepower and ran on heavy fuel. You should not assume that in those days diesel engines were installed on cars comparable to tractor ones. For example, in 1939, the German car Hanomag was able to show an impressive speed of 155.94 km / h.
