Who are seeders, feasts and lychees, or how do torrents work

Conscious “pirates” download illegal content only to familiarize themselves with it, and if they like it, then they get it. At least I would like it to be so in reality. Talking about where to download and how to download will be completely superfluous – we all know about torrent trackers, for many of us these sites have been bookmarked for a long time.

However, there are still users who, knowing how to find and download movies, music, books and software to their device, at the same time confuse the meaning of the words “feast”, “seed” and “lich”. Actually, these words will be discussed further.

To begin with, it’s not out of place to explain in general terms how the file-sharing networks work using the example of BitTorrent. So, we all know that on the Web you can dig a lot of interesting, but at the same time inaccessible or copyrighted content. To avoid problems with the law, this content is not stored on the server, but on users’s computers. When we find the file we are interested in on the Web and connect to its distribution via the torrent client, then we start downloading it from other users. Along with the way we upload content to ourselves, we also begin to distribute it. It is important to note here that the more users store the file of interest to us on their device, the easier it will be for us to download it. Therefore, it is advisable not to leave the distribution after downloading the content, so that other users have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with it. Now let’s move on to deciphering the terms.

What are seeds, feasts and lychees in torrents

A feast (Russian tracing paper from the English word “peer”) is a file sharing participant. As soon as we start downloading or distributing any content through torrent networks, we immediately become “feasts”. If on some site the number of peers is displayed, we must understand that this number shows the total number of both downloads and distributors.

Feasts are of two kinds Sida and Lychee (lychera).

Sid (again a tracing-paper from English “seed”) is a feast on the device of which the full version of the file being distributed is stored. That is, as soon as we download the content that interests us completely, we immediately receive the honorary title of Seed.

Sid is a feast, a file sharing participant, but only the one who downloaded the entire file and did not leave the distribution after that (did not delete it from the client torrent or from the device).

Leach (leecher)

A lich (tracing paper with “leech”) is a feast that has either not fully downloaded content (selectively) or is in the process of downloading it. As soon as the distribution is fully downloaded, the lich will automatically become a seed.

The download speed depends mainly on the number of seeds on the distribution, therefore it is recommended not to leave it after downloading the information of interest. After familiarizing yourself with downloaded films, music, books, software, etc., if you like them, it is advisable to purchase them. Thus, we enable content authors to continue to delight us with their new products.
