Review of the game “The Unfinished Swan” for iPhone and iPad

The Unfinished Swan is an indie adventure originally exclusive to the Playstation. But in September 2020, it became available for both Windows and iOS platforms. High ratings from critics and an unusual style of the game make you pay attention to the “Swan Sketch”. After all, she is a clear example of how unusual ideas and non-standard presentation of gameplay remain fresh even after years.

The game introduces us to the boy Monroe. He’s obviously unhappy. After the death of his mother, Monroe ended up in an orphanage where no one cares about him. Mom was an artist, and a very unusual one – having started many paintings, she was never able to finish them all. However, there are explanations for this. And in memory of her, the boy has only one creation – the image of a swan with an unpainted neck. One night, Monroe woke up and did not find a bird on the canvas. But traces of her paws were found, which led to the door that appeared out of nowhere. Monroe took his mother’s brush with him as a talisman or tool or weapon and went in search of the swan. After all, this is his only connection with the past. And then reality gives way to a fairy tale, in which we have to find ourselves.

We control this Monroe and see the opened world through his eyes. At first, we find ourselves in a completely white room, which can even be a little confusing.

But then it turns out that the brush is in our hands for a reason – it’s a tool with which you can throw drops of paint. First we throw black blots, behind which the outlines of walls and objects appear. Traces of a swan are also found, following which we plunge deeper into the magical world and learn its history. It turned out that the snow-white castle was built by the king, who was tired of fighting with his subjects who love colors. The monarch painted a woman, and then the picture turned into a real person. This happens in a fairy tale. Monroe became the fruit of the artist’s love and his creation. But the king went into voluntary exile, and his son who appeared in this magical world decided to find his father. Moreover, the swan is clearly leading him in the right direction. Of course, the boy will receive answers to his questions and return to the real world.

The gameplay of Swan Sketch turned out to be far from traditional adventure games or shooters. Yes, we shoot, but not at running enemies with shells, but in an empty space with paint or water. This is what allows the hero to paint and thereby reveal this world. Sometimes you have to jump and climb, but in general, the journey is linear and will not allow you to get lost. And although the chapters clearly differ from each other in the mechanics of dealing with light or colors, the essence remains the same. Also in the game world you can find balloons that can be collected by shooting them with the same paint. This is how you earn currency, which is proposed to be spent on improving items or new possibilities for shooting paint. Sometimes on the walls you can find golden letters that open new chapters of Monroe’s story. Of course, one wants to dive into it in order to better understand the purpose of his location here.

Review of the game

The soundtrack for the game was chosen with meaning. The publisher, Sony, reached out to American composer Joel Corelitz. With his music, he managed to reflect the diversity of the levels of the game, but at the same time did not protrude it, leaving it in the background and maintaining minimalism. Built on obviously synthetic sounds, the ambient perfectly conveys the feeling of the protagonist’s loneliness. Monroe initially holds sadness in his heart, but in this tale he finds cause for optimism and hope. Mixed in with a mixture of magic and curiosity, the soundtrack is 43 minutes long and is a noteworthy piece in itself.

Review of the game

The graphics of the Swan Sketch do not seem to amaze with their complexity, but they form really high-quality art. Clear lines and understandable colors have become part of the appropriate minimalism. Some places of the magic kingdom want to admire and even look at, leading the camera around.

Review of the game

Swan Sketch is a simple game that was originally planned for children as well. But adults will find it interesting, touching the hidden strings and the story itself, and an unexpected approach to the gameplay, and pleasant art. A touching fairy tale will be interesting for all the few hours it will take to complete it.
