Over the years of work on Portrait Mode, the mechanism for automatically programmed background blurring in images has been significantly improved and now produces very solid images relatively comparable to images obtained in DSLR cameras with basic optics.

In iOS 11, a new lossless image compression format (HEIF) was introduced, which allows you not only to reduce image size by up to 40% without degrading image quality, but also to store auxiliary information, including the effect of depth. As a result, in a few clicks you can quickly switch between images with and without bokeh effect, as well as change its intensity.
